Mubtaker gets his first feel for the Woodbine turf course Tuesday by cantering with Angela McCleary aboard.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Scan down the list of trainers with candidates for Sunday's Canadian International and you will see a miniature "Who's Who" of the profession.

From overseas, Aidan O'Brien and Saaed bin Suroor. From the United States, Bob Baffert and Bobby Frankel. From Canada, Mark Frostad.

At the other end of the spectrum there is the Fort Erie-based owner-trainer Richard Jukosky, who is leaning in favor of starting Lenny the Lender in the Grade 1, $1.5 million turf feature for 3-year-olds and upward.

With six stakes left to ride, Bejarano trails record by two

Rafael Bejarano rides Runway Model to her Alcibiades victory.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 2004 fall meet at Keeneland may well be remembered for the Mutuel Fun wager, the unveiling of a training track covered with a revolutionary synthetic surface, an experiment with high-tech chart-calling, or the fan-friendly low takeouts on multi-race wagers.

But as the meet hits its halfway mark Wednesday, it seems that the breakthrough that jockey Rafael Bejarano has made at this meet may be the best story. Bejarano not only leads the jockey standings with 13 wins, he also has a chance at a record for most stakes victories at a Keeneland meet.

Main event a $56,000 scramble

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Halfway home, but better than half good. Even with its handful of cheap races, the Wednesday program that marks the halfway point of the 17-day Keeneland fall meet still should meet the approval of racing fans most everywhere.

Four allowance races worth a total of $214,000 - an impressive figure by any standard - form the core of a program that starts with the first $15,000 maiden-claiming race of the meet.

Blazing Purrsuit good to go

ELMONT, N.Y. - There is only one week remaining, and trainers Jimmy Toner and Mike Hushion are still seeking their first victories at the Belmont fall meet.

Either one could accomplish the feat in Wednesday's seventh race, a $47,000 allowance at six furlongs for 3-year-olds and up who have never won two races.

Katana's status iffy due to rain

ARCADIA, Calif. - Rainy weather could affect Wednesday's featured seventh race at Santa Anita, a $45,000 allowance race on the hillside course for fillies and mares.

If wet weather forces the race to the main track, the American debut of the promising Katana will be postponed.

Kabel chases old Ontario stakes mark

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Dashing Admiral will go from turf to dirt and likely be favored in Wednesday's $132,500 Deputy Minister Stakes, a seven-furlong dash for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds at Woodbine.

Dashing Admiral has two wins and three thirds in six starts this year, all under Todd Kabel. Kabel would equal Avelino Gomez's single-season record of 32 stakes wins by a jockey in Ontario with a victory in the Deputy Minister. Gomez set the record in 1966.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Musical Chimes, the winner of the Grade 2 Oak Tree Breeders' Cup Mile against males on Oct. 9, will not start on the Breeders' Cup program at Lone Star Park on Oct. 30, trainer Neil Drysdale said Sunday.

The 4-year-old Musical Chimes will instead be pointed for the $500,000 Matriarch Stakes, a Grade 1 for fillies and mares over a mile on turf at Hollywood Park on Nov. 28. Last year, Musical Chimes finished second in the Matriarch.
