Eddington shaky favorite on grass

MIAMI - Mention the name Eddington and one immediately thinks about his battles earlier this season against Smarty Jones, Birdstone, and Tapit in prestigious races such as the Wood Memorial, Preakness, Belmont, and Travers. And as a result of that reputation, Eddington is likely to go off the favorite when he drops in against Grade 3 competition in Saturday's $200,000 .

For Sur La Tete, relaxation is key

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Trainer Neil Morris's primary job before Saturday's Grade 1, $175,000 Breeders' Cup Steeplechase will be keeping Sur La Tete calm.

A promising newcomer, Sur La Tete recently graduated from the novice ranks and beat veteran jumpers by 11 1/2 lengths in the Grade 2 Metcalfe Memorial in late September at Monmouth Park.

"We're going to have Sur La Tete run his race and see if he's good enough," said Morris. "It seems good enough against the horses we've met so far. He's earned the right to be there."

Inaugural Johnson split into divisions

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Meadowlands Racetrack remembers the late Hall of Fame trainer P.G. Johnson Saturday night with the first running of a stakes named in his honor.

Johnson holds the Big M stakes record with 19 victories. His Volponi ran second in the 2002 Meadowlands Breeders' Cup Stakes and used that race as the springboard to his stunning upset in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The Johnson, for 3-year-old fillies at five furlongs on the turf, was split into a pair of $55,000 divisions.

Galloping Grocer has all the goods

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Galloping Grocer beat statebred allowance rivals by 12 1/2 lengths last month, despite coming out of the race with a lung infection.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Todd Pletcher is used to being in the catbird seat when it comes to 2-year-old stakes. So it must take a special horse to make him issue what amounts to a concession speech even before Saturday's $100,000 Sleepy Hollow Stakes is run.

"I'd say we're all running for second, assuming Galloping Grocer runs the same way he has been," said Pletcher, who sends out Carminooch in the Sleepy Hollow. "But it's a horse race. Anything can happen."

Quiet Ruler due for annual wake-up

ELMONT, N.Y. - Quiet Ruler paid $93 and $42.80 in winning the last two runnings of the Mohawk Handicap on New York Showcase Day at Belmont Park. Quiet Ruler's form coming into Saturday's Mohawk looks bleak, but then again, he does his best when the odds are stacked against him.

'Ellens' simply looks too good
