Everyone fears She's a Jewel

ARCADIA, Calif. - Good news for opposing horsemen is bad news for chalk players Sunday at Santa Anita, where vulnerable favorite She's a Jewel entered the $75,000 Anoakia Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. Her status is questionable.

She's a Jewel dashed to a five-length maiden win in her last start, earning an 81 Beyer Speed Figure that would make her a leading contender in the six-furlong Anoakia. But will she start?

"I don't know," trainer Vladimir Cerin said Friday. "I haven't had a chance to work her; I don't know how fit she is having missed some time."

Battle Won delivers a win

Trainer Chuck Simon came as close as possible to promising victory for his stable star, Battle Won, in the $84,675 Woodford County Stakes at Keeneland on Friday.

One lost shoe and several stern challenges later, Battle Won, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, delivered what his trainer promised, winning the 5 1/2-furlong turf race as the favorite in a field of 10 older horses. For Bejarano, the victory was the sixth in a stakes at the fall meet, just one off the Keeneland record.

Yakteen gets his shot with Sabiango

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Tim Yakteen experienced his share of international success during his days as an assistant to trainers Charlie Whittingham and Bob Baffert.

His highlights included a Japan Cup victory with the Whittingham-trained Golden Pheasant in 1991 and a Dubai World Cup victory with Baffert and Captain Steve in 2001.

Yakteen's travels have also brought him to Woodbine. He was here for Whittingham when Urgent Request ran 10th in the 1996 Breeders' Cup Mile.

But Yakteen has returned here this week in a far different guise.

A crisis of sorts brewing in jockeys' room

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Friction has been developing between Hastings management and some of the 13 jockeys that make up the current local colony, and last week several horses had to be scratched as a result. Amazingly, one of the most contentious issues between the two parties revolves around beer in the jockeys' room.

All signs point to Punctilious

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The high strike rate of European-based 3-year-old fillies in the E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine has been well documented, with 17 of the last 22 winners fitting that profile.

There are three such candidates for Sunday's Grade 1, $750,000 Taylor, with Punctilious, from England, and the French fillies Asti and Ometsz among a very competitive field of 10 for the 1 1/4-mile turf feature for fillies and mares.

As Expected could upset Nearctic

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - There are many exceptional horses running at Woodbine on Sunday in the two Grade 1 stakes on the card, the Pattison Canadian International and the E.P. Taylor. However, the fastest turf runner on the program might be As Expected, a longshot possibility in the Grade 2, $282,750 Nearctic Handicap.

As Expected was an astute $40,000 claim last fall by trainer Radlie Loney, who took him specifically to try to make a turf specialist out of him. The plan has worked to perfection.

Whose nose in front now?

STICKNEY, Ill. - The aging Ivan Jay Perry was having an unlucky season even without making things harder for himself. He created another obstacle here Oct. 1 by trying to hurdle. Closing fast in the middle of the Hawthorne turf course, Ivan Jay Perry apparently looked down and saw the tracks worn into the grass by the starting gate. He gave a hop, switching his leads at an inopportune moment, and won by a nose anyway.

Louisiana: Two straight for 'Jester'?

Mr. Jester can win his second straight race in the fifth at Louisiana Downs. The 1 1/16-mile allowance drew a competitive field, including Mauk Four, Seainsky, Wolf Trick, and Record Assembly.

Mr. Jester ran one of the best Beyer Figures of his career last out when he pushed the pace and drove to a two-length win in an optional claimer at Louisiana Downs. He earned a Beyer of 94, 1 point below his career best of 95. Last year, Mr. Jester won the $1 million Delta Jackpot.
