Don't sell this colt short

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - When a horse shows good speed for the first time in a while, it's usually a sign that he's coming up to a big effort. If that holds true for Don'tsellmeshort, then the seven other 3-year-olds entered in the feature race at Hastings Sunday are running for second money. The 1 1/16-mile allowance race for horses that haven't won a stakes drew a solid field that includes stakes-placed Future Flash, Cariboo Prospector, and Victory Light.

Longstaff well prepared for life after 'Vixen'

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - By anyone's standards, owner-trainer Tom Longstaff has had a successful year. He campaigned the sensational 4-year-old filly Dancewithavixen to another local divisional championship and there's certainly nothing wrong with his overall record of 18 wins from 91 starters, which equates to an excellent 20 percent.

There have been some low points as well, however. Dancewithavixen pulled up and was vanned off following her 7 1/2-length win in the B.C. Cup Distaff on

Snowdrops, winning the Politely on the turf at Monmouth in June, had a setback and has not run since Aug. 11.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Snowdrops, who hasn't run since finishing second following a troubled trip in the De La Rose Stakes at Saratoga, is among 12 entered in a wide-open edition of the Grade 3 Athenia Handicap at Aqueduct on Sunday.

Snowdrops's trainer, Christophe Clement, said the filly had a "training setback" after the Aug. 11 De La Rose. Earlier in the year, Snowdrops won four consecutive races, including the Politely Stakes at Monmouth Park in June. The Politely was run at 1 1/16 miles on the grass, the distance and surface of the $100,000-added Athenia.
