Three Valleys big fave back with 3-year-olds

ARCADIA, Calif. - Three Valleys, who was an outstanding third-place finisher in last month's Grade 1 Citation Handicap in his North American debut, looms as the shortest-priced favorite of the day when he returns to a race exclusively for 3-year-olds in Sunday's $100,000 Sir Beaufort Stakes at Santa Anita.

The Sir Beaufort, the day's seventh race, is one of two supporting stakes on a card topped by the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes. The fourth race, which begins the pick six, is the $125,000 California Breeders' Champion Stakes for 2-year-olds.

Yearly Report looking good

A series of fast works, a track record last out, and Jerry Bailey in the saddle combine to make Yearly Report the horse to beat in Monday's La Brea.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Yearly Report has proven herself around two turns, but she is virtually unbeatable around one turn. In four sprints, she has won three times, her lone loss coming when second to Silent Sighs, part of the stellar cast of California-bred 3-year-old fillies of 2004.

Shout to the North drops into the Cal Breeders' Champion after going 2 for 4 against open company in Canada.

ARCADIA, Calif. - House of Fortune would have been one of the leading contenders in Monday's Grade 1 La Brea Stakes, but trainer Ron McAnally opted to keep her out of the race and instead await the 6 1/2-furlong Kalookan Queen Handicap on Jan. 5. She has not raced since finishing last of seven in the Spinster Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 10.

Consistent 'Class' tries two turns

ALBANY, Calif. - Class Edition has been a profitable investment for trainer Ed Moger Jr.'s main clients, Curt and Lila Lanning.

Purchased for $17,500 as a yearling, Class Edition has hit the board in 10 of 11 starts for earnings of $50,190. She will receive a new challenge Monday at Golden Gate Fields when she tries two turns for the first time in a one-mile allowance race for fillies and mares.

A 3-year-old filly by the Danzig sire Game Plan, Class Edition was bred by Becky Birklid.

"The breeder has been telling me forever, 'Why don't you route her?'" said Moger.

Three-way rematch in feature

PORTLAND, Ore. - Outofthisworld looks to repeat when he heads a field of 10 sprinters in Monday's six-furlong feature, for open $2,500 company.

Outofthisworld, a 5-year-old son of Flying Continental from the barn of trainer Delmer Webb, is coming off a sharp score under the same conditions on Dec. 13. In that race, Outofthisworld came from off the pace under Tim Neal to score by 1 1/4 lengths over Jac Four Girls, with On El Bon a neck back in third. His clocking was a good 1:12.60 for the six furlongs.

Ignacio has the tools for quick buildup

A new apprentice rider with strong backing has made his way to Turfway Park, and it would not be a great surprise if he began making an immediate impact at the Florence, Ky., track.

Rodolfo Ignacio, 20, has hired Steve Elzey as his agent after being strongly recommended by trainer Dale Romans. Ignacio, a native of Gerrero, Mexico, began his career this fall by riding at East Coast tracks, where he rode 10 winners, including several for trainer Todd Pletcher.

As sprinter, Stone Rain has an edge

ARCADIA, Calif. - At first glance, Stone Rain may seem out of place in the field for Sunday's Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita. Stone Rain lost for a $25,000 claiming price in his first two starts and had to be dropped in for $20,000 in order to get his first win. In fact, two of his four victories came against claimers.

California dreamin' Kentucky Derby

Horsephotos
Hollywood Futurity winner Declan's Moon (right) tops a talented class of soon-to-be 3-year-olds training in California. Also high on any list is Roman Ruler.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Beginning with Silver Charm in 1997, through Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000, the Kentucky Derby winner emerged from California for four straight years. A four-year drought has since ensued, but this winter, the most promising collection of Derby prospects in years is congregated in Southern California.

The roster is led by Declan's Moon, the undefeated winner of the Hollywood Futurity and the probable 2-year-old champion. But this is far from a one-horse town.

Tricky Surf dangerous despite rise

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainer Steve Specht doesn't mind that he can't figure out the 4-year-old filly Tricky Surf.

"Every time I run her, I think she's in too high," he said.

He has the same thought about his placement of Tricky Surf in Sunday's $100,000 Work the Crowd Handicap at Golden Gate Fields.

probably won't be one of the favorites among the 10 Cal-bred fillies and mares in the one-mile turf race, but she will take some beating.
