San Miguel tempts Lukas

Bill Straus
Total Impact (3), finishing second to Midway Road in the Fayette at Keeneland,is the 120-pound highweight for Saturday's San Pasqual Handicap.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Despite an outstanding maiden win on Dec. 26 that earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure, the 3-year-old Going Wild has received scant attention. That may change Sunday at Santa Anita if D. Wayne Lukas starts the colt in the $100,000 San Miguel Stakes.

The six-furlong San Miguel is not the first choice for Lukas or the colt's owners, Bob and Beverly Lewis. But considering the sprint has fallen apart - neither Fusaichi Samurai nor Roman Ruler will start - Lukas said Tuesday he will reconsider the San Miguel for Going Wild, a $400,000 2-year-old.

Oaklawn next stop for More Moonlight

NEW ORLEANS - Even though she defeated only three rivals in Saturday's Letellier Memorial Stakes, More Moonlight clearly has the look of a filly with a lot of promise.

A 3-year-old filly by More Than Ready, More Moonlight was the heavy favorite in the betting until a few minutes before post time, when someone placed a bet of several thousand dollars on Hot Storm, knocking her down to 1-2 odds and sending More Moonlight up to 8-5. By the time the horses went in the gate, however, late money pushed More Moonlight backed to 3-5 favoritism.

Vazquez duo packs punch

NEW ORLEANS - The entry of Thunder Bullet and Bay Marvel heads a solid field of turf sprinters in Thursday's feature race at Fair Grounds, a $34,000 optional claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs.

is the turf specialist in the Gamaliel Vazquez-trained entry. A 6-year-old Valid Wager gelding, Thunder Bullet has not won since owner Michael Gill claimed him for $100,000 in Dec. 2003 at Hollywood Park, but he has raced well in better company, including a third in a similar race last out at Fair Grounds. His entrymate, Forty Milito, won that race.

Arroyo gets his second chance

Jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. wins aboard Bank Audit in the Interborough.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Two years ago this week, Norberto Arroyo Jr. was sitting in a Long Island, N.Y., jail cell with plenty of time to think about a once-promising career gone awry.

"All you do in there is think," said Arroyo, who served 39 days for a second-degree assault conviction stemming from a pool hall fight in June 2002. "You have nothing else to do."

Snake Mountain wants it dry

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Horseplayers must grapple with a number of issues as they handicap Thursday's eighth race at Aqueduct, not the least of which is the strong probability of a wet inner track.

Eight older males entered the mile and 70-yard allowance, which also has an optional claiming price of $85,000. The likely favorite is Snake Mountain, a 7-year-old gelding who has won all five of his starts on the inner dirt, including three stakes in the winter of 2002-03.

'Clickety' can handle wet track

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainers and handicappers have plenty of theories about why some horses run well on wet tracks.

"Probably none of them like the mud. Some just handle it better," said trainer Dennis Ward.

, whom Ward trains, is one who, if she doesn't like the mud, at least handles it well. That could serve her well in Thursday's Golden Gate Fields feature, a $50,000 optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles for fillies and mares.

Dry track prods hundreds to work

Tuning up for Sunday's Santa Ysabel Stakes, Sweet Catomine works between races Saturday at Santa Anita under exercise rider Jose Dominguez.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Because of the relentless cycle of storms that have visited Southern California the past week, the main tracks at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park have largely been closed for workouts. With more rain forecast beginning Sunday night, and the tracks as reasonably dry as they had been in days, trainers knew Sunday morning was their one glimmer of hope if they wanted to get in a workout.

"Nobody thought the track was perfect, but it was like - this is your one chance," said trainer John Sadler.

Provincial a force on carryover card

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - With a seemingly favorable pace scenario, the possibility of a desired wet track, and having defeated half of this field in her last start, Provincial is clearly the one to beat in Wednesday's $46,000 featured second-level allowance race at Aqueduct.

Wednesday's card includes a pick-six carryover of $48,740 after the wager went unhit on Sunday.
