Zito high on 'Thunder' in Runyon

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - No Galloping Grocer, no problem filling the entries for Sunday's $75,000 Damon Runyon Stakes, restricted to New York-bred juveniles. A field of 12 was entered for the 1 1/16-mile race, run over Aqueduct's inner track.

Galloping Grocer established himself as the top New York-bred juvenile with three dominating victories in statebred competition and a narrow loss to undefeated Rockport Harbor in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes. There are other talented New York-bred juveniles, such as Up Like Thunder and Summerland, who top this field.

'Leopard' lands in tough spot

NEW ORLEANS - The well-bred 3-year-old turf filly Leopard Hunt and the hard-hitting 5-year-old mare Chilling Effect top a good field of 11 fillies and mares at Fair Grounds in

Sunday's feature, a two-other-than allowance at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

Daddy Cool streaks into meet finale

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The $137,375 Valedictory Handicap, Woodbine's closing-day feature, has been won by a diverse cast of runners over the years, from stakes winners to claimers. Daddy Cool, the probable favorite in Sunday's renewal of the 1 3/4-mile marathon, is a combination of the two.

Daddy Cool, trained by Sean Smullen for Stronach Stable, capped a four-race win streak in 2002, when he won Walter Haight Handicap at Laurel Park. After running sixth in another Laurel stakes in January of 2003, he was laid up for nearly a year and a half with a suspensory problem.

Turf feature full of tough 3-year-olds

ALBANY, Calif. - Two first-level allowance races top an interesting Sunday card at Golden Gate Fields.

A pair of maiden races open the card. In the seventh, an overflow field of fillies and mares has signed up for a 1 1/16-mile turf race. The co-feature in the eighth attracted seven runners going six furlongs.

A trio of 3-year-old fillies appear to be the ones to beat in the turf race. Yet another 3-year-old, I Fooled You, has a pair of seconds over the course but is on the also-eligible list and may not draw in.

Lady Tak may head to Florida

NEW ORLEANS - Record-breaking trainer Steve Asmussen seems to have a horse for every condition, but one of the most talented horses in his barn at Fair Grounds, Lady Tak, has no race in the condition book suited to her.

"We're looking at the Sunshine Millions at Gulfstream Park on January 29th," said Asmussen.

Sharp Lisa ready to rebound

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - In a seven-week span earlier this year, Sharp Lisa took a quick journey to nearly the top of racing.

The 2-year-old Sharp Lisa went from winning a maiden race at Calder to placing in a Grade 2 at Keeneland to finishing unplaced in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Looking back, trainer Doug O'Neill thinks the schedule was asking too much of Sharp Lisa. For that reason, she has not started since finishing sixth in the Juvenile Fillies.

Commentator legs up for Hal's Hope

MIAMI - Trainer Nick Zito's New York-bred sensation Commentator breezed five furlongs at Gulfstream Park on Friday morning, although the work won't appear on any clocker's tab.

With the grandstand gone and a temporary facility under construction at Gulfstream, there is hardly any vantage point for trainers or clockers to view, let alone accurately time, horses during training hours there. As a result, there are no official clockers employed at the track, even though the main track has been open for training since the second week of November.

Sons of Favorite Trick form solid entry

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - The $164,000 Marathon National at Los Alamitos on Sunday may be primarily for Quarter Horses, but Kentucky-based Thoroughbred stallions will have an important role in the outcome of the 870-yard race.

Romans has year to remember

Trainer Dale Romans did not have a starter in last weekend's Hollywood Turf Cup, but the outcome of the race likely provided a horse he trains with a championship. When Breeders' Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now finished sixth behind Pellegrino that day, it solidified Kitten's Joy's status as the favorite for the Eclipse Award as outstanding turf horse.
