Derby purse has ripple effect

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Churchill Downs stakes schedules for the 2005 spring and fall meets were released Friday with more revisions than usual. The changes are attributable to the announcement last week that the purse for the 131st Kentucky Derby has been doubled to $2 million.

A total of $375,000 was reallocated from other stakes to help fund the higher purse for the May 7 Derby. Still, Churchill will be paying out more than $10 million in stakes purses in 2005, the first year the track has exceeded that threshold.

The changes caused by the new Derby purse include:

Valenzuela awaits another ruling

ARCADIA, Calif. - The California Horse Racing Board was to meet Friday to discuss a ruling by an administrative law judge that supported jockey Patrick Valenzuela's contention that he was unjustly suspended. The administrative law judge, H. Stuart Waxman, ruled in November that the Del Mar stewards were in error when they suspended Valenzuela in August for failing to submit to a hair follicle test at Hollywood Park in July.

The decision was released by the board Thursday evening through the California Public Records Act.

Now it gets tough

Commentator, unbeaten in five starts, will race beyond a mile for the first time in the Hal's Hope.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Dynever is a Grade 3 stakes winner and millionaire and finished third in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Classic. Purge has won a pair of Grade 2 stakes. Badge of Silver is a Grade 3 stakes winner and finished second in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile. Added Edge won the Sovereign Award as Canada's champion 2-year-old.

Despite the strength and class of the competition, all eyes will be on the undefeated and still untested Commentator in Saturday's $100,000 Hal's Hope Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

Trainer vs. his past

High Fly, winning an allowance race last out, goes for his third straight win in Saturday's Aventura.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Bill White is hoping his past doesn't catch up to him when he runs High Fly in Saturday's $125,000 Aventura Stakes. Run at a mile, Aventura is the and drew a full field of 12 3-year-olds.

High Fly, who is undefeated in two starts, will have to contend with two horses whom White trained in 2004: Magoo's Magic, who is now trained by Allen Jerkens, and D'court's Speed, who is trained by Nick Zito.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Gulfstream Park president Scott Savin was smiling as he walked to the paddock before Thursday's 10th race.

"What a difference a day makes," said Savin as the second day of the 2005 Gulfstream meeting was drawing to a close. "This was just a great day. Everything went just the way it was supposed to.

We really needed those 48 hours to work out the bugs."

Familiar foes reunited in San Pasqual

ARCADIA, Calif. - Three months after they finished a head apart in the Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap, Lundy's Liability and Total Impact meet again in Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 at Santa Anita.

Both could use a win as a springboard to more important stakes, and to offset recent losses. But an expected off track, and the presence of a few rivals capable of an upset, may spoil those plans.

Turf stakes at mercy of weather

ARCADIA, Calif. - At least on paper, Saturday's $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap for fillies and mares at Santa Anita appears to be an outstanding turf race.

That may be as close as the race gets to being run on turf, though, because of recent wet weather. With further rain expected, there is a strong chance the Grade 2 San Gorgonio will be run over 1 1/8 miles on the main track.

A transfer would most likely lead to the withdrawal of Grade 1 stakes winners Ask for the Moon and Megahertz.
