Wend best of the three from Tampa

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Three horses who won their maiden at Tampa Bay Downs are among the main contenders in Friday's $33,000 allowance feature at Gulfstream Park. The first-level allowance race is at 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

Wend, a Claiborne Farm homebred by Pulpit; Keeping Watch, a well-bred daughter of Danehill; and Contagious all won maiden special weight races over Tampa's turf course in their most recent start. Of that group, Wend appears the most dangerous, having captured her first and only try on grass by a comfortable two lengths despite setting a contested pace.

Track has its biggest day under CDI

NEW ORLEANS - After starting out with only marginal gains in attendance and handle, Fair Grounds gave Churchill Downs Incorporated its first home run of its first season operating the track on Saturday.

The crowd of 4,695 on Louisiana Derby Preview Day was not as large as the attendance some of the bigger tracks pull on major race days, but it was a dramatic improvement on the 3,032 that came for last year's Risen Star. Fans packed the smallish Fair Grounds grandstand, and the parking lot was completely filled.

Maiden shipper good fit for 'Cappy'

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The field for Saturday's $75,000 Fred "Cappy'' Capossela Stakes was in such flux as of Wednesday that a maiden could be one of the favorites for the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds.

The connections of would-be contenders Benjamin Baby and Maddy's Lion seem more inclined to wait for next month's $150,000 Gotham Stakes. Two of the other horses nominated to the Capossela are entered in an entry-level allowance race here on Friday.

Potential vs. form in sprint feature

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Several sharp claimers will test the allowance ranks in Friday's Bay Meadows feature, a wide-open six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares.

Juliet, Paranoid Mistress, and Future Thought are the only runners in a field of nine to have never run for a tag. But each has only won a maiden race. The other six are multiple winners against softer competition.

That provides handicappers with a quandary. Does one go for the perceived class runners or settle on a sharper runner who has passed tests against easier?

Two $1M policies in place
