Snack, appearing hopelessly beaten at the top of the stretch, unleashed a furious stretch run to win the $50,000 by 3 1/4 lengths over a muddy track.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - High Fly stamped himself the first Kentucky Derby candidate of the meeting after cruising to a convincing nine-length victory over 11 rivals in Saturday's $125,000 at Gulfstream Park.
High Fly ($8.20) entered the Aventura undefeated and untested in two previous starts and remained that way after turning in a devastating performance in the first race ever run out of Gulfstream's new one-mile chute.
ARCADIA, Calif. - Fencelineneighbor and jockey Luis Jauregui reached milestones in Saturday's $150,000 at Santa Anita - they both won their first graded stakes.
Fencelineneighbor ($4.80) led throughout 1 1/8 miles on a sloppy track, holding off a stubborn Uraib to win by two lengths.
For Jauregui, 35, the win marked the biggest success of his 17-year career. The race was downgraded from a Grade 2 to a Grade 3 after it was transferred from turf to dirt, but that didn't bother Jauregui.
"It was big for me," he said. "I'll take it."
NEW ORLEANS - The Dallas Stewart-trained Psych may hold a slight edge when a full field of 12 4-year-old fillies clash in Monday's feature race at Fair Grounds. The first-level allowance will be run at six furlongs and promises to be a good betting race.
Psych, a 4-year-old daughter of Mazel Trick, finished third to Gold Margarita as the odds-on choice in her first start over the track and has never been off the board in five lifetime starts. She will be ridden by the track's leading jockey, Robby Albarado.
The final six races of Aqueduct's Saturday card, including the $75,000 Count Fleet Stakes, were canceled when the jockeys refused to ride, citing unsafe track conditions.
The Count Fleet, New York's first stakes of the year for 3-year-olds, was rescheduled for next Saturday and will be open to original nominees. It will be redrawn Thursday.
Track superintendent Jerry Porcelli said the inner track absorbed six-tenths of an inch of rain Saturday and was sloppy to start the day. Porcelli declined to comment further.
Second of June shipped to Gulfstream Park from his base at Calder Race Course on Saturday and worked a mile in 1:39 with jockey Cornelio Velasquez aboard. It was the first time Second of June had been to Gulfstream since his second-place finish in the 2004 Fountain of Youth Stakes.
The Ohio River reached flood stage in the Cincinnati area on Friday, forcing River Downs to close its racebook indefinitely.
Although no more rain is forecast for southwestern Ohio until Tuesday, the Ohio River is expected to continue rising, cresting at an estimated 56 feet, four feet above flood stage.
Both ends of Kellogg Avenue leading to River Downs are closed to traffic because of flooding. According to track publicist John Engelhardt, officials hope to be able to reopen River Downs for simulcasting by Thursday.
NEW ORLEANS - Crimson Stag turned in a determined performance Saturday at Fair Grounds to win the $75,000 in front-running fashion over Zarb's Music Man.
Jockey Robby Albarado used a slightly different strategy with Crimson Stag than in previous races, sending the 4-5 favorite to the lead out of the gate. Zarb's Music Man broke alertly, then was taken back to last by jockey E.J. Perrodin.
ARCADIA, Calif. - It will be wet and miserable if runs Sunday, unusual conditions for the return of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner. Her trainer, Julio Canani, can spin it how he wants, but admits, "I wish the rain would go someplace else."
Seven fillies entered the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes, and everyone is asking the same question - will Sweet Catomine run on a wet track?
"Yes, she's going to run," Canani said Friday. "I prefer to find out now if she likes mud or not. She trains good in the mud."
