Lion Tamer to Richter Scale

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The good news for trainers with horses pointing to next Saturday's Richter Scale Breeders' Cup Sprint Championship here is that the Todd Pletcher-trained Forest Danger will not be running. The bad news is Pletcher has an equally talented colt to put in the starting gate.

Barring a last-minute change of heart, Pletcher plans to run Cigar Mile winner Lion Tamer in the Grade 2, $200,000 Richter Scale and hold Forest Danger out until the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct on April 9.

Attila's Storm, from stakes to maidens

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - There is no stakes at Aqueduct on Sunday, but those who hammered the 3-year-old to even money in the recent Fred "Cappy" Capossela Stakes can bet him back in a maiden special weight sprint that goes as the fourth race.

Attila's Storm was coming off Beyer Speed Figures of 98 and 97 in his first two career starts at Santa Anita. He finished third in his debut behind Going Wild, who subsequently won the San Miguel and the Sham and was scheduled to run in Saturday's Santa Catalina.

Casual Cat's speed vs. Metcalfe's class

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Casual Cat, who earned a Beyer Figure

of 96 in his last start, and Metcalfe, who was second to the red-hot Rodeo's Castle in his most recent race, make the featured ninth race Sunday at Oaklawn Park a matchup of speed and class. The six-furlong allowance race for nonwinners-of-two has a purse of $33,000.

Casual Cat won his maiden by four lengths here on Feb. 17, and one day after the race, his trainer, Steve Hobby, was still fielding congratulatory calls on the gelding's impressive win.

"He is fast," said Hobby.

Revealed faces tough French filly

Rockport Harbor puts in mile breeze

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Kentucky Derby candidate Rockport Harbor breezed one mile in 1:39.95 on Friday morning at Oaklawn Park. Rockport Harbor is expected to make his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 3, $250,000 Rebel here March 19.

The work was the fastest of two at the distance, with Kichwa Tembo, an unraced 3-year-old, traveling one mile over the fast track in 1:42.40.

Rare plethora of exotic bets

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Bay Meadows will be the place for exotics players to be Sunday.

It may not sound like much, but enough horses have been entered so that, barring scratches, trifecta wagering will be available in all nine races on the card, and the day ends with superfectas in the final five races. California rules call for a minimum of six horses in a race to allow for trifecta wagering and eight for superfectas.
