Leroidesanimaux captures Kilroe Mile

ARCADIA, Calif. - Leroidesanimaux overcame a truncated workout schedule and benefited from the tough trips encountered by both Buckland Manor and Musical Chimes to score a front-running victory in Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000 at Santa Anita.

The Kilroe marked a long-anticipated meeting between the two best turf milers on the West Coast, Leroidesanimaux and Breeders' Cup Mile winner Singletary. But Singletary faded to finish seventh in the field of nine after sitting in a perfect spot, just outside the dueling leaders.

Declan's Moon stays perfect

ARCADIA, Calif. - Declan's Moon, the champion 2-year-old male of 2004, remained unbeaten in five starts after scoring a sharp two-length victory in his 3-year-old debut in Saturday's $200,000 at Santa Anita.

The race marked Declan's Moon's first prep race on the road to the Kentucky Derby, and first outing since a win in the Hollywood Futurity in December.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - High Fly added his name to trainer Nick Zito's growing list of Kentucky Derby hopefuls with a very professional three-quarter-length victory over Bandini in Saturday's $300,000 at Gulfstream Park.

High Fly was transferred to Zito's barn by owner Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Plantation shortly after suffering his first setback in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes on Feb. 5. He joined stablemates Sun King, Andromeda's Hero, and Noble Causeway, an allowance winner earlier on the card, as potential Derby contenders from the potent Zito barn.

'Fog' takes Swale, shows he can rate

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Lost in the Fog officially joined the Triple Crown trail on Saturday, and spots on his bandwagon are selling out quickly.

Proving that he could sit off another horse if need be, Lost in the Fog took over from pacesetting More Smoke at the quarter pole and cruised through the stretch to a 4 3/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $150,000 at Gulfstream. Around the Cape got up for second by three-quarters of a length over More Smoke.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Eddington shed his underachieving label for good on Saturday by rolling to a 3 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $300,000 . Pies Prospect rallied for second by 3 1/4 lengths over Zakocity.

Eddington had gone winless in his previous eight graded-stakes attempts on dirt, though he did win the Grade 3 Calder Derby on turf. At 3, Eddington finished third in the Preakness and fourth in the Belmont Stakes.

Forward Gal: Letgomyecho stays perfect

Letgomyecho was the lesser regarded of the two unbeaten fillies entered in the Grade 2, $150,000 , taking a back seat to the odds-on favorite, Maddalena. But in the end it was Letgomyecho who remained undefeated after she posted a hard-fought half-length decision over a game Little Money Down in the seven-furlong stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Maddalena finished a tiring fifth at odds of 3-5.

Jerry Bailey spoiled Pat Day's return to the saddle by getting Jill Robin L up in the final strides to nip favored In the Gold by a nose in the Grade 2, $150,000 for 3-year-old fillies. It was 2 3/4 lengths back to Aspen Tree.

Day, who has taken the bulk of the winter off to spend time with his family, was riding for the first time in five weeks.

Afleet Alex super in debut

Afleet Alex wins the $50,000 Mountain Valley Stakes at Oaklawn Park by 2 3/4-lengths.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Afleet Alex turned in an outstanding effort in his seasonal debut Saturday in the $50,000 at Oaklawn Park, storming to a 2 3/4-length win in the six-furlong race that will serve as a stepping-stone to the Grade 3, $250,000 Rebel Stakes here March 19.

The race also gives Afleet Alex three races before the Kentucky Derby.

Afleet Alex covered the six furlongs in the Mountain Valley in 1:09.52. He went out seven furlongs in 1:22.60 and galloped out a mile in 1:39.40, according to clockers at Oaklawn.

Hydrogen gets up by nose

Saving ground on both turns as a slow pace developed, Hydrogen unleashed a powerful late rally to win the Stymie Handicap by a nose over odds-on favorite Aggadan at Aqueduct on Saturday.

The program scratches of Rogue Agent and Salic Law reduced the field to five and left Halo Malone as the lone early speed in the $75,000-added route. Halo Malone was able to set comfortable fractions of 24.54 seconds, 49.52, and 1:14.38 while saving ground.

Magna Graduate scores easily

Magna Graduate, a distant third behind High Fly in the Aventura Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 8, found the competition in the $100,000 at Turfway Park more to his liking Saturday, winning by 3 3/4 lengths.

Ridden by leading jockey Dean Sarvis, Magna Graduate broke on top but was allowed to relax in second, as favored Ultimate, another invader from Florida, shot to the lead. Magna Graduate sat about 1 1/2 lengths behind Ultimate, who posted splits of 23.08 seconds and 46.86 in the early going.
