Trickey Trevor looks tough

SAN MATEO, Calif. - It's hard not to like or respect Trickey Trevor in Saturday's $55,000-added San Carlos Handicap at Bay Meadows.

"You don't get a chance to ride a horse that wants to win as much as you do very often," said Russell Baze, his jockey.

has won five straight races and, although he has never won a stakes, he is the likely favorite in the six-furlong San Carlos.

Trickey Trevor was an easy choice for Baze, even before his stablemate, Smoocher, was not entered in the race.

"He's a lot more self-motivated," Baze said.

Tullock has reasons to believe

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer Tim Tullock believes there are three popular handicapping angles that point to his Sensibly Chic avenging her loss in last month's Barbara Fritchie Handicap to Cativa in Saturday's $150,000 .

First, there is the third race off a layoff angle. Three times in her career, Sensibly Chic has won in her third start of a form cycle, something she will be doing in the Grade 3 Distaff going seven furlongs.

Scipion fractures leg in workout

ARCADIA, Calif. - Scipion, the winner of last month's Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds, came out of a workout on Wednesday at Santa Anita with a fractured right hind cannon bone, his trainer, Patrick Biancone, said Thursday morning.

According to Biancone, Scipion suffered a non-displaced condylar fracture, which was to be repaired via surgery on Thursday at a nearby clinic operated by Dr. Vince Baker.

"We will operate and then go from there," said Biancone, who said Scipion would be out several months. "Fortunately, the break is non-displaced. It's nice and clear."

'Beter Man' on the brink of going after graded stakes

NEW ORLEANS - The Beter Man Can is one of the brightest stars to emerge from the 2004-05 Fair Grounds meet. A 3-year-old Louisiana-bred filly, The Beter Man Can whipped her peers in restricted races and won the Tiffany Lass Stakes against open company.

She has performed so well in open company that Saturday's $100,000 Sarah Lane's Oates Handicap, a mile grass stakes for 3-year-old Louisiana-bred fillies, may be her last race against statebreds for a while.

All Wired Up striding into stakes

All Wired Up was one of the flashiest maiden winners of the Delta Downs meet, and on Saturday night he will get tested for class when he takes on two stakes winners and three stakes-placed colts in the field of seven 3-year-olds for the $50,000 Clyde B. Stephens Memorial there.

All Wired Up won his maiden in his third career start last out, rolling to an 11 1/4-length win in a five-furlong race on Feb. 12. He covered the distance in a sharp 58.80 seconds and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 91, the highest number earned among all starters in the Stephens.

Sam Houston: Native Annie the hot one

Native Annie, who has won 4 of her last 5 starts, will cut back to one turn and return to dirt for the $40,000 Double Your Flavor at Sam Houston Race Park.

The seven-furlong race is restricted to fillies and mares bred in Texas.

Native Annie won the last time she raced around one turn, capturing a one-mile optional claiming allowance at Arlington Park Sept. 15. It was the start of her current hot streak. From there she won the $75,000 Allen Bogan at Lone Star Park and the $75,000 Martanza at Sam Houston Race Park, both two-turn stakes for fillies and mares bred in Texas.

Beulah: Yankee Road on a roll

Yankee Road goes for his fourth straight victory and heads a full field of 12 Ohio-bred 3-year-olds in the $40,000 Howard B. Noonan Stakes at Beulah Park.

Though Beulah has been racing for the past 2 1/2 months, the six-furlong Noonan is the first stakes of the year in Ohio.

Yankee Road returned from a seven-month layoff at Beulah Feb. 11 and overcame a slow start to defeat older allowance rivals by 7 1/4 lengths for trainer Albert Palacios.

Fonner: Burning Memories starting '05

Burning Memories will make her much-anticipated 2005 debut when she faces six others in the $15,000-added Runza Handicap for older fillies and mares going six furlongs at Fonner Park.

Burning Memories, trained by Jim Cranwell, is the two-time defending champion in the Runza Handicap, and she should be well backed in her efforts to make it three straight. Although she is making her 2005 bow here, she has been working well. Her last three workouts have been at five furlongs, and she appears sharp as ever. Perry Compton will ride at 120 pounds.

'Boots' may wait off pace

CHICAGO - When the National Jockey Club at Hawthorne meet opened on Feb. 25, Chicago still was firmly in the grip of winter. Nights were well below freezing, daytime temperatures rarely reached 40, and the racetrack generally was frozen, hard, and fast.

It is not as though spring is in full bloom now - check back in May for that - but the days and nights are much warmer, and the racetrack could hardly be more different from the speedy winter highway seen early in the meet.

Next Move distance just right for Friel's for Real

Saintliness makes her graded stakes debut in Friday's Next Move 'Cap.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The rain, snowflakes, and falling temperatures here Wednesday made it feel as if winter will never end. But the field assembled for Friday's $100,000 Next Move Handicap at Aqueduct indicates that spring is here.

Five stakes winners were among the nine fillies and mares entered in the Grade 3 Next Move, including Daydreaming, Friel's for Real, and the undefeated Saintliness. The Next Move is run at 1 1/8 miles over the main track, which is likely to be sloppy.
