Jerkens filly out to upend Wend

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - For the second consecutive day Thursday, trainer Bill Mott figures to have the one to beat in the feature at Gulfstream Park, when he sends out as a heavy favorite in a $35,000 allowance on turf. But trainer Allen Jerkens isn't exactly conceding.

Jerkens will counter in Thursday's 1 1/16-mile feature with Savage Beauty, a 4-year-old daughter of Joyeux Danseur who returned from a five-month layoff to finish a game fourth in a similar race on March 19. Savage Beauty led throughout before succumbing in late stretch.

Sir Toasty on upswing in puzzler

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Thursday's Bay Meadows feature is at one of the most interesting levels offered at the track: $40,000 starter allowance.

The race, for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles, has seven entrants - three coming in directly off maiden victories. Two entrants have yet to try a two-turn race.

To run, an entrant must have started for a claiming price of $40,000 or less and have not won two races.

Dettori and Wilko reunited

Jockey Frankie Dettori, who rode Wilko to his upset win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last October, will reunite with Wilko in the Grade 1, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 9, trainer Craig Dollase said Tuesday.

Corey Nakatani had ridden Wilko in his two subsequent starts. But Nakatani has chosen to stick with the filly Sweet Catomine for the Santa Anita Derby.

"We're pretty excited about it," Dollase said of securing Dettori. "He knows the horse. I think he'll give us a hell of a ride."

Buzzards Bay works swiftly

ARCADIA, Calif. - Buzzards Bay will be an outsider in the Santa Anita Derby, but an impressive workout Tuesday morning at Santa Anita stamps the colt as a live longshot who will try to give trainer Jeff Mullins his third consecutive upset in the Grade 1, 1 1/8-mile race on April 9.

Buddy Gil, the 2003 winner, paid $15. A year ago, Castledale returned $62.

Mark Guidry worked Buzzards Bay six furlongs in 1:11, fastest of the day by more than one second.

"He did it real easy," Mullins said.

BC Sprint runner-up in for a tag

ARCADIA, Calif. - He was a $10,000 claimer who became a world-class sprinter. But Thursday at Santa Anita, the 8-year-old gelding is just another claiming sprinter trying to regain his form. Up the ladder, and down again.

From fall 2003 to winter 2004, rags-to-riches Bluesthestandard was among the country's top sprinters. Owned by Jeffrey Sengara and trained by Ted H. West, Bluesthestandard finished second in Breeders' Cup Sprint, and earned successive 114 Beyer Figures in the BC Sprint and the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Handicap.

Silky Summer relishes one mile

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The best horses on the Oaklawn Park card will run early on Thursday. The feature is slated as the first of 10 races, and the one-mile allowance for fillies and mares looks like a battle among solid favorite Racing Luck, five-time winner Silky Summer, and the Charles Cella-owned entry of Amanuensis and Spurt.

Unusual Syndrome and If Nine Was Six complete the field for the two-other-than allowance, which carries a purse of $34,500.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The turf course figures to get plenty of use during the final month of the 2005 Gulfstream Park meeting.
