HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Greater Good breezed five furlongs Saturday at Oaklawn Park in his first work since running down Rockport Harbor to win the Grade 3, $250,000 Rebel on March 19.

Greater Good, preparing for the Grade 2, $1 million Arkansas Derby on April 16, went five furlongs in 1:04.55 under regular rider John McKee.

"We'd like for him to go a little faster, but we'd also like for him to go too slow [rather] than too fast," said Bob Holthus, who trains Greater Good. "He finished strong, so we're happy.

She's Wild may be over a barrel

STICKNEY, Ill. - There's no need to equivocate. The Charlie Vinci stable has simply been on fire during the National Jockey Club at Hawthorne meet.

Silver Bid the star of class cast

STICKNEY, Ill. - A quiet Tuesday at Hawthorne, and out pops a stakes-class sprint race.

The featured fourth race here, for high-end allowance horses or $100,000 claimers at six furlongs, has only five horses in it, but all of them are good.

Offlee Wild romps in slop

Offlee Wild is back, and in a big way. The 5-year-old horse, who beat Funny Cide in the Mass 'Cap last June prior to an eight-month layoff, splashed away to a lengthy score in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 at Aqueduct - the richest race of the season so far in New York.

Offlee Wild, who six weeks ago was beaten a neck by Coast Line in the John Campbell Handicap at Laurel, figured to have that rival to beat in the Excelsior, but Coast Line stopped badly approaching the stretch and faded to wind up last in the field of five.

Storm's Darling wins the $100,000 Goddess Breeders' Cup at Delta Downs on Saturday.

Storm's Darling proved much the best Friday night in the $100,000 Goddess Breeders' Cup at Delta Downs, when she drew out to a seven length win in the mile and a sixteenth race for fillies and mares. Miss Confusion finished second, four and three quarter lengths in front of Legs O'Neal.

Storm's Darling ($3.20) tracked pacesetter Miss Confusion through fractions of 24.73 seconds for the opening quarter, 48.81 seconds for the half-mile mark, and 1:13.82 for six furlongs. Storm's Darling overtook that one and went on to cover the distance over a fast track in 1:45.96.

Older, maybe better

Kela, winner of two graded Del Mar stakes last year, has raced below par his last two races.

ARCADIA, Calif. - When an 8-year-old earns a career-best speed figure in his 42nd start, cynical handicappers expect the veteran to retreat next out. But on Sunday at Santa Anita, trainer John Sadler suggests doing that would be a mistake.

Ten sprinters will race 6 1/2 furlongs in the Grade 2 Potrero Grande Handicap, and the Sadler-trained is the horse to beat if he duplicates the Beyer Speed Figure of 105 he earned last month winning the Grade 2 San Carlos Handicap. It was the ninth win from 42 starts for Hasty Kris.

New Science may get break on front end

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - , who has been forced to battle hard for the lead in each of his last three starts, might finally be able to set an uncontested pace and, as a result, get back to the winner's circle for the first time in nearly five months in Sunday's $35,000 allowance feature at Gulfstream Park.

The 1 1/16-mile turf race goes under second-level allowance conditions and replaces the afternoon's scheduled feature, the $50,000 Hallandale Beach Stakes, which did not fill.

'Stormy' leads field of seven in Rainbow

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Stormy But Crafty, who has won three of his last four starts, should go favored over a competitive field of seven for the $50,000 Rainbow Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Sunday. The six-furlong race for 3-year-olds is restricted to horses bred in Arkansas.

Also on the program is the $50,000 Rainbow Miss, for 3-year-old fillies bred in Arkansas.

Someone's win streak must end

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Sunday's Bay Meadows feature offers two noteworthy examples of horses who seem to have found the secret to winning.

Ghost Actor has won four straight and five of six, losing only in a photo finish since his maiden victory.

El Prado's Boy has won three in a row, starting with his maiden victory on Dec. 19.

Ghost Actor and El Prado's Boy meet in a $50,000 optional claimer at one mile Sunday.

Not coming 2,000 miles for nothing

PORTLAND, Ore. - Texas trainer K.C. Carden will pay a second visit to Portland Meadows on Sunday to saddle a pair of Quarter Horses for the $13,000 Professionals Choice Claiming Challenge at 350 yards.

If Carden's first visit was any indication, bettors should take notice. Last year Carden vanned a pair of runners the 2,387 miles from Manor Downs in Texas to Portland Meadows and saw them run one-two in the same race, with A Toast of Kc winning and Dusty Corona running second.

For this year's Professionals Choice Claiming Challenge, which is one of 10 qualifying heats at
