In 80th year, River rolls on

River Downs in Cincinnati begins its 2005 racing season on Friday, and if the mood around the track these days is celebratory, it is quite understandable.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the track's opening, and despite numerous obstacles, River Downs remains alive and well. In its eight decades of existence, River Downs has survived floods, the Great Depression, ontrack business declines, and the onslaught of alternative gaming - forces that have spelled doom for other tracks.

A place touched by past and future stars

River Downs
A number of Hall of Fame horses and riders have competed at River Downs over the years.

Historians often refer to the 1920's as the Golden Age of sports, when such athletes as Babe Ruth, Red Grange, and Bill Tilden became household names. The legendary Man o' War and Exterminator were among Thoroughbred racing's superstars of that era, but more telling evidence of racing's growing popularity during the decade was a boom in racetrack construction.

Bells Fool has come a long way

SAN MATEO, Calif. - One year ago, it would have been folly to think about Bells Fool contending in allowance company.

But when night racing returns to Bay Meadows on Friday, the 5-year-old Bells Fool will be a major player in the feature race, a one-mile allowance.

His primary opposition will come from Lindero, the probable favorite, and speedy Tenth Street, who makes his first start around two turns.

Fast-closing Meteoric eyes breakthrough

Meteoric, coming off a close second in the Carmel Handicap, searches for his first Los Alamitos stakes win Friday when he is part of a deep and talented field in the Grade 3, $27,250 Kaweah Bar Handicap at 350 yards.

Meteoric closed strongly in the 350-yard Carmel on March 11, but came up a nose short of Pennants Chick, who is starting in the Miss Princess Handicap on Saturday night. While Meteoric has not won a stakes at Los Alamitos, he has strong Grade 1 credentials with seconds in the 2002 Los Alamitos Million and the 2004 Los Alamitos Winter Championship.
