Back to the basics

Lone Star Park
Lone Star Park reopens for the first time since playing host to the Breeders' Cup.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - In the pantheon of racetracks, Lone Star Park falls obviously onto the side of the clean. The track is manicured and meticulously maintained. But there, beside a parking lot, was an aging scrap of paper with two words: Breeders' Cup.

Those two words still hover in the Lone Star air. But 5 1/2 months after serving as host of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, the crowning achievement in Lone Star's brief history, the track returns to being itself with the start of its ninth spring Thoroughbred season Thursday night.

Yessirgeneralsir finally back

Yessirgeneralsir (above) will be favored in the $50,000 Premiere Stakes for Texas-breds on opening night at Lone Star Park.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The knot sits on the outside of Yessirgeneralsir's left knee, obvious even to a casual spectator.

"A blind man would notice that one," said trainer Dallas Keen.

The blemish is the visual evidence of the knee surgery performed last fall to remove bone chips from Yessirgeneralsir's joint, but if the physical problem and its subsequent remedy are bothering him, there is no evidence of that in his training.

Afleet Alex drills bullet 46.30

In a workout accomplished with ease, Afleet Alex breezed four furlongs in a bullet 46.30 seconds Tuesday at Oaklawn Park. The drill was his final major preparation for Saturday's Grade 2, $1 million Arkansas Derby.

"He looked like he was just galloping along," said Tim Ritchey, who trains Afleet Alex.

Afleet Alex came home his last quarter in 21.80 seconds and galloped out five furlongs in 58.69 seconds. Jeremy Rose, the leading candidate to ride Afleet Alex on Saturday, was aboard for the drill.

Zito's priorities swing to Sun King

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Three down, two to go, although Nick Zito is not among those keeping a close count. Regardless of how many of his Kentucky Derby prospects have already run their final preps, Zito maintains that his primary focus this week is getting Sun King into, and out of, the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes in perfect order.

Bright Mahogany unknown quantity

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The list of probables for Saturday's $150,000 Comely Stakes at Aqueduct does not read like a who's who of the 3-year-old filly division. That's good news for the connections of Bright Mahogany, a filly whose name probably elicits the response, "Who's that?'" from most handicappers.

Greater Good looking to convert skeptics

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - For all Greater Good has accomplished, he has never really gotten the respect he deserves. A winner of 5 of 7 starts, he has been the betting favorite just once in his career.

Greater Good will be out to prove himself once again on Saturday, when he makes his final start before the Kentucky Derby in the Grade 2, $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.

Count Fleet sets up well for closers

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The abundance of speed in the Grade 3, $150,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn Park on Thursday is enough to make a trainer with a horse who can come from off the pace salivate. Just ask Andrew Leggio, Bob Holthus, and Cole Norman.

In the Gold in Beaumont as Oaks prep

LEXINGTON, Ky. - In one of those disappointing years when trainer Nick Zito did not have a starter in the Kentucky Derby, he derived great satisfaction from winning the Kentucky Oaks. That was 2003, when Bird Town upset the Oaks at 18-1 on her way to the 3-year-old filly championship.

Trainer Bobby Frankel said that Ghostzapper, who missed the Oaklawn Handicap with a sinus infection, is being pointed for the Met Mile.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Ghostzapper, the reigning Horse of the Year, is nearing his first workout since having recovered from a serious sinus infection, trainer Bobby Frankel said Tuesday at Churchill Downs.

Ghostzapper will breeze at Churchill, "probably over the weekend," Frankel said before Ghostzapper went out for a routine gallop. "This is the fifth day he's gone to the racetrack, and the third day he's galloped."
