Magistretti makes return in Elkhorn

LEXINGTON, Ky. - One of the more enduring images from the 2004 fall meet at Belmont Park is Magistretti kicking into overdrive to win the Grade 1 Man o' War Stakes. Two disappointing defeats soon followed, but the race remains a vivid reminder of what Magistretti can do.

Following a six-month layoff, will resurface Friday, and just in the nick of time for the Keeneland fans. The feature on closing day of the 16-day spring meet is the $200,000 Elkhorn Stakes, a 1 1/2-mile turf race that trainer Patrick Biancone hand-picked as a suitable return spot for Magistretti.

Angara has little trouble in Bewitch

Bill Straus
Angara, with jockey Gary Stevens up, draws clear in the stretch and scores a 1 3/4-length victory in Wednesday's Bewitch at Keeneland.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - As the field passed through the stretch for the first time in the 1 1/2-mile at Keeneland on Wednesday, jockey Gary Stevens had a firm hold of favored Angara. Racing down the stretch for the second and final time, his pose hardly changed. It didn't need to - she easily won the Grade 3, $109,300 Bewitch, scoring by 1 3/4 lengths before a crowd of 9,225 at Keeneland.

A good Withers effort may send Scrappy T to Preakness start

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Scrappy T was the main reason the Maryland-based trainer Robert Bailes opted to open up a New York string over the winter. Now, he's hoping Scrappy T can take him back to Maryland for that state's biggest race next month.

Bailes said should Scrappy T run well in Saturday's Grade 3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct, he could earn himself a berth in the Preakness Stakes on May 21 at Pimlico.

"If he runs big on Saturday, that's what we're going to point towards,'' Bailes said.

Lemon Maid succeeds despite big class jump

Michael Burns Photo Ltd.
Lemon Maid wins the Star Shoot Stakes in only her second start.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - It's generally a quantum leap from maiden special weight to stakes company, but Lemon Maid made the move look routine here in last Sunday's six-furlong Star Shoot.

Adding to the accomplishment was the fact that Lemon Maid, a Kentucky-bred 3-year-old filly, recorded her maiden victory in her debut at Fair Grounds on Feb. 25 and was racing for only the second time in the Star Shoot.

"She sure stepped up the other day," said trainer Malcolm Pierce. "She looks great; everything seems good."

Delaware 'Cap at $1 million

The Delaware Handicap will be worth $1 million this year, making Delaware Park's premier event the second-richest dirt race for older fillies and mares in the nation. Only the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff is worth more.

Bill Fasy, chief operating officer of Delaware Park, announced Wednesday that an additional $650,000 beyond the $4.2 million already dedicated to the 2005 stakes schedule will be spread among three races.

Fasy said the track is making an overpayment to horsemen to raise the stakes purses. Money dedicated to overnight purses will not be affected.

Norman shoots for hard eight

Louisiana Downs
Louisiana Downs opens Friday with improvements outside and in - such as a renovated track surface that will better handle rain.

Cole Norman faces quite a challenge as he goes after his eighth straight training title at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La. His barn exceeded his expectations at Oaklawn Park this winter by winning 62 races during the 55-date meet, and now he is racing at both Louisiana Downs and Lone Star, which overlap into July.

He also has fewer horses in training than last meet, a higher percentage of 2-year-olds, and lost a fair amount of conditions with his horses while winning his fifth straight title at Oaklawn.

Twilight Road still has a lot of run left in him

Looking at his form, it is surprising that Twilight Road is now 8. He almost overtook Eurosilver at 21-1 last out in the Grade 3, $100,000 Skip Away at Gulfstream Park, earning one of the better Beyer Speed Figures of his career, a 102. And in his final prep for the Skip Away, Twilight Road worked six furlongs in a sharp 1:10.60.

Saturday, he can become the oldest winner of the Grade 3, $300,000 Texas Mile at Lone Star, a distinction held now by 7-year-old Sir Bear, who won the race in 2000.
