Home of Stars rallies to win the $92,700 Milwaukee Avenue at Hawthorne on Saturday.

STICKNEY, Ill. - Inside speed ruled the six-stakes Illinois Day for statebreds on Saturday at Hawthorne. The favored Home of Stars lacked the speed to make the lead in the Milwaukee Avenue Handicap, but jockey James Graham took care of the inside part, rallying the horse up the rail for a 2 1/4-length victory over 10-year-old Magic Doe in the $92,700 Milwaukee Avenue.

Graham atoned for an earlier disqualification on Jaguar City, who was taken down for interference at the start of an earlier stakes. Frank "Bobby" Springer trains both horses.

Four Footed Fotos
Top Kick wins the $90,950 Land of Lincoln Stakes at Hawthorne on Saturday.

The 64-year-old trainer Paul Darjean has weathered some lean recent years, but now he has come up with a good horse. Top Kick, who won his career debut here only one week ago, led all the way from post 1, beating the much more accomplished, heavily favored Humor at Last by 4 1/4 lengths in the $90,950 Land of Lincoln Stakes. Darjean gallops Top Kick himself. He also bred and co-owns the colt with Dick Millard.

Top Kick ($20.40) made an easy lead and won without being hard-ridden in his maiden race, and Darjean already had nominated him to the Land of Lincoln.

Hal's Image, a half-brother to the 2000 Florida Derby winner, Hal's Hope, covered the 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in 1:48.89 and returned $21.60.
