Absent Peery returns with Con Quixote

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Bay Meadows closes its spring meet with a 10-race card on Sunday that features the return of stakes winner Con Quixote and his trainer, Chuck Peery.

Goldfine turns to Atlantic Frost for first victory

STICKNEY, Ill. - It has been a Murphy's Law kind of meet for trainer Mickey Goldfine. When his horse has needed the lead, he has broken slowly. When his horse has needed pace to run at, he has gotten none. The sum of all those bits of bad fortune is that Goldfine still seeks his first win of the season as the National Jockey Club at Hawthorne meet trickles down to its final days.

'Notes' eyes first win at one turn

AUBURN, Wash. - Swingn' Notes will carry high weight of 119 pounds when she takes on seven rivals in Sunday's six-furlong Hastings Park Handicap at Emerald Downs.

A 4-year-old daughter of French Deputy trained by Bud Klokstad, Swingn' Notes earned her impost with three stakes wins last season. All four of her career triumphs have come around two turns, however, and she is winless in four starts at six furlongs.

Senorita a starting point

Benoit & Associates
Shining Energy, Rene Douglas up, tries two turns again in the Senorita.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The day after the Kentucky Derby can be anticlimactic, but at Hollywood Park on Sunday, the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes gets it all started for 3-year-old fillies on grass.

A field of 10 will go a mile on turf in the $100,000 Senorita, which is the first of two preps for the centerpiece of the meet - the Grade 1 American Oaks at 1 1/4 miles July 3. The Senorita and Grade 2 Honeymoon at 1 1/8 miles on June 5 will sort out the division, and as always, the competition will get tougher as the distances get longer.

Acey Deucey iffy for Bouwerie

ELMONT, N.Y. - Field sizes for dirt races have been anemic in New York this spring, but that is not the case for Sunday's $100,000-added Bouwerie Stakes at Belmont Park.

The seven-furlong Bouwerie drew a field of 14 3-year-old New York-bred fillies, four of which were also entered in Saturday's Grade 2 Nassau County Breeders' Cup at the same distance.

The strength of the Bouwerie field will depend on whether any or all among Acey Deucey, Seeking the Ante, Slew Motion, and Pretty Partisan opt for Saturday's more prestigious and lucrative race or await this spot.

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Sunday's optional claiming feature at Louisiana Downs brings together an eclectic group of fillies and mares, many with higher aspirations than the $26,500 purse at stake in the one-mile grass race.

Asmussen present vs. past

The Niner Account, formerly of the Steve Asmussen barn, and Western Roar, currently of the Steve Asmussen barn, square off in the featured eighth race on Sunday at Lone Star. But Asmussen has nothing to do with Archeval, who could beat both of them if he transfers his dirt form to turf.

Call Caraballo a winning firster

Jose Caraballo admits he was more than a little upset when he looked over the overnight sheet for the opening-day program at Delaware Park and saw he wasn't listed to ride in the first race.

Why should Caraballo care, you ask? Well, what might seem like a bit of racing trivia to some is actually a small claim to fame Caraballo points to with pride. For three years running, Caraballo had won the meet's first race at Delaware, a streak he feared was about to end last weekend.

"I was worried I would not even get the opportunity to keep the streak alive," Caraballo said.
