Battle Won rewards trainer's confidence

Battle Won paid $35.80 to win in the Churchill Downs Handicap on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

As Kentucky Derby Week loomed, trainer Chuck Simon couldn't help but notice that the Churchill Downs Handicap lacked a standout. Figuring that his stable star Battle Won might rate as good a chance as any other horse, Simon committed him to the race.

Comp USA: One-horse stable triumphs

Trainer Bradley Ross brought his one-horse stable from Chicago to Kentucky and left with all the money as Miss Terrible led gate to wire to win the Grade 3, $112,200 by one length.

Sand Springs, the 3-1 favorite in a wide-open race, chased the pace and held second by a nose over Shaconage, who won this race at 19-1 last year. Mambo Slew, Warning Zone, Boasting, and Ticker Tape completed the order of finish.

Three Chimneys: Half Ours all aces

For the third time in seven years, trainer Todd Pletcher sent out a fleet 2-year-old to capture the $120,000 on the Kentucky Derby undercard, this time on Saturday with Half Ours. Limehouse and More Than Ready, his two previous winners, both came back a year later to compete in the Kentucky Derby, and if Half Ours can make it, too, at the least Pletcher will know the colt can handle the pressure of Derby Day.

Storm the Beach tough to catch

CHICAGO - Trainer Jim DiVito had gone west Saturday to central Iowa, where Coach Jimi Lee was scheduled to run in a Prairie Meadows sprint stakes. Coach Jimi Lee is the king of the DiVito shed row, at least in terms of talent, speed, and class. But there is another pretty good sprinter named Storm the Beach in the barn, and he runs Monday in the featured first race at Hawthorne.

Uncle Camie upsets Don Six in Bold Ruler

Uncle Camie cruises toward the wire all alone under Richard Migliore in Saturday's Bold Ruler Handicap.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Don Six, the 3-5 favorite, suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of New York-bred Uncle Camie in Saturday's Grade 3 at Belmont Park.

Uncle Camie blew by Don Six in the final furlong of the $106,600 Bold Ruler for a 2 3/4-length win. Don Six held on for second, a head in front of Thunder Touch.

Don Six's trainer, Scott Lake, said he was uneasy when the gates opened for the six-furlong Bold Ruler. Don Six, ridden by Aaron Gryder, rushed to the lead after uncharacteristically breaking a step slowly.

Nassau County: New York-breds rule

Seeking the Ante completed an all-New York-bred stakes double in the $200,000 for 3-year-old fillies. Under Mike Luzzi, Seeking the Ante came from off the pace to win the Grade 2 Nassau County by a length over Slew Motion.

Acey Deucey, the 8-5 favorite in the seven-furlong Nassau County, finished fourth after failing to launch a rally in the stretch, a move that won her the Grade 2 Comely in her previous start. Exit to Heaven, the pacesetter, finished third, two lengths behind Slew Motion. Seeking the Ante ($13) ran the distance in 1:22.86.

Egg Head earns first stakes win in LaBelle

Egg Head easily handled the challenge of moving up to face stakes runners for the first time, scoring his third straight decisive victory in the $77,138 Francis "Jock" LaBelle for 3-year-old sprinters at Delaware Park.

Ridden by Joe Hampshire Jr. for Philadelphia Park-based trainer Lynda Knee, Egg Head ($5) stalked the early pace set by Magoo's Magic and Benjamin Baby, swung wide entering the stretch to take the lead, and drew off to win by 9 1/2 lengths. He covered six furlongs on a fast track in 1:11.28.

Tampa Bay: Whenthedoveflies romps

Whenthedoveflies wins the first running of the $75,000 Lightning City Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday.

Whenthedoveflies roared past the leaders leaving the turn and went on to post a smashing five-length victory in the inaugural running of the $83,150 Lightning City Stakes.

Under a confident ride by Jose Lezcano, Whenthedoveflies ($3.80) covered the five furlongs in 56.54 seconds for her ninth turf win from 11 career grass starts and 12th overall win from 19 starts. The $45,890 winner's share boosted her career earnings to $304,170.

In the $75,000 Chris Thomas Turf Classic, Hear No Evil led all the way en route to an upset victory in the nine-furlong turf race.
