Sweet Talker takes on softer bunch

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It isn't very often that a horse wins a six-figure stakes race, then shows up three weeks later in an allowance race. That rare opportunity presented itself to the connections of Sweet Talker, and trainer Ken McPeek was more than willing to take advantage.

The timing was just right for a world record

AUBURN, Wash. - No sooner had Sabertooth and jockey Nate Chaves crossed the wire in Sunday's 6 1/2-furlong than the chorus began.

"That can't be right," said many of the more knowledgeable members of the big weekend crowd.

The doubters were referring to the times posted on the tote board, which read: 21.80, 43.20, 1:06.40, and 1:13.

Shippers take stakes over holiday

CALGARY, Alberta - Trainer Dave Forster swept both stakes at Stampede Park on the holiday weekend, following up Blowin in the Wind's victory in Saturday's $50,000 Teeworth Plate with Summer Symphony's tally in Monday's $50,000 Ken Pearson Memorial.

Forster vanned both horses back to their Hastings base on Tuesday morning.

In the one-mile Pearson Memorial, Forster chose to employ local rider Quincy Welch after flying Robert Skelly over from Hastings to ride Blowin in the Wind.

Pass Rush: Past his prime - or primed?

Benoit & Associates
Pass Rush, 6, comes into Saturday's Hanshin Handicap with more than a half-million dollars in earnings. But he also has not won a race since early January 2003.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Four horses are shipping north from Churchill Downs for the Hanshin Handicap on Saturday at Arlington Park. Crafty Shaw won the race last year; Missme just finished third in the Alysheba at Churchill; Gouldings Green was a sharp winner of a recent allowance race; and then there is Pass Rush, the enigmatic member of the quartet. Pass Rush has earnings of more than a half-million dollars, but hasn't won a race since early January of 2003, and will be dismissed by many as a horse past his prime.

Don't read much into Battle Won's turf work

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Chuck Simon apparently doesn't want to let Battle Won know too much.

Last year, Simon molded Battle Won into a successful grass sprinter. But after one grass race in April, Simon abruptly switched Battle Won back to dirt, and the gelding responded with a sensational upset of the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Handicap on the May 7 Kentucky Derby undercard.

Megahertz a no-go for Gamely

Horsephotos
Miss Terrible, winning the Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill, will go off as the starting highweight in Monday's Gamely BC Handicap at Hollywood.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Disgruntled over a 124-pound weight assignment, trainer Bobby Frankel said Wednesday that Megahertz will not start in Monday's $350,000 Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park.

The decision robs the Gamely of its leading contender. Megahertz, an 11-time stakes winner and earner of more than $1.6 million, was expected to be a standout in the Grade 1 turf race for fillies and mares over 1 1/8 miles.

As a result of Megahertz's absence, Miss Terrible has inherited the role of starting highweight, at 118 pounds.

Taking a shot against Baffert horse

ALBANY, Calif. - That trainer Bob Baffert has entered stakes-winning Courageous Act in Friday's claiming feature at Golden Gate Fields is surprising for several reasons.

Courageous Act is a $500,000 purchase by Bob and Beverly Lewis, and was on the periphery of the Derby trail last year. He won the San Pedro at Santa Anita and was second to Sir Shackleton in the Derby Trial and later ran second to Swingforthefences in the Iowa Derby.

Nevertheless, makes his 4-year-old debut here Friday in a six-furlong sprint with a $25,000 claiming tag.

Nicks barn enjoys hot start

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Just a few minutes after Ralph Nicks sent out Cool Conductor to over Artie Schiller in the Grade 2 CompUSA Dixie Stakes on the Preakness undercard, his father, Morris, was also having his picture taken, albeit with much less fanfare.

A victory by Take a Pass in nonwinners-of-two company for a $12,500 tag was the elder Nicks's latest success during a solid first month of the current meeting at Louisiana Downs.
