Red Fort zeroes in on Whittingham

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Saturday's $350,000 at Hollywood Park has been the goal for Red Fort all year.

A win in an allowance race at Santa Anita in March and a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Inglewood Handicap here in April were only the prologue to a summer campaign that owner Walter Swinburn and trainer Neil Drysdale hope will include the Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar and the Arlington Million at Arlington Park.

"That's the plan," Drysdale said. "Whether he can execute it is another matter."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Carl Nafzger is excited about what the future may hold for Atlas Valley. And as long as Summerly isn't part of that immediate future, Nafzger is content.

With Summerly not entered, figures as one of the favorites Saturday in the $150,000 Dogwood Breeders' Cup, a Grade 3 race in which Summerly had been scheduled to make her first start since her two-length victory in the May 6 Kentucky Oaks.

Berkeley pits three toughies

ALBANY, Calif. - Graded stakes winners Skipaslew, Smoocher, and Yougottawanna meet in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Berkeley Handicap at Golden Gate Fields.

On the original Golden Gate stakes schedule, the 1 1/16-mile Berkeley was listed as a $75,000 stakes race. But when racing secretary Sean Greely confirmed that the race would be able to retain its graded status, he rearranged stakes purses to enable the Berkeley to meet the $100,000 minimum to qualify as a graded race.

As a result, the Berkeley drew a talented field of seven.

Handful from Heiligbrodt

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - It is no accident that Bill Heiligbrodt has five starters between the two $150,000 divisions of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity at Lone Star Park on Saturday.

And he not only owns those five horses, but he also bred them all in the name of his Heiligbrodt Racing Stable.

"He's got the most awesome program going," said Steve Asmussen, who is the trainer of Heiligbrodt's five qualifiers for the two futurities. "He's just got a beautiful group [of 2-year-olds] every year. The group that you get in are just racehorses."

Kirby gets ready to pucker up

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Kissin' Frank Kirby won the Arlington training title last season, but the victories this year have come in a trickle, not a torrent. A month into Arlington '05, and following on the heels of a strong run at Hawthorne over the winter, Kirby has gotten just two chances to blow his trademark kisses to the camera leaving the winner's circle following a victory.

Is the third time a charm for Private Lap?

Private Lap fell a neck short of winning the Brandywine Handicap in 2003. Last year, he came within a neck of winning the same stakes.

Back for a third crack at the $100,000 Brandywine on Saturday at Delaware Park, Private Lap at least won't have to face either Bowman's Band or Loving, the horses who narrowly beat him the past two years.

In their place, however, are Super Frolic and Clays Awesome, both of whom have the credentials to play spoiler to Private Lap this time.

Mountaineer: Flint holding two aces

Kentucky-based trainer Bernie Flint has the horse with the best last-race Beyer Speed Figure and the defending champion lined up for the $75,000 Slipton Fell Handicap at Mountaineer Race Track.

Flint has named Chad Murphy as the rider of both Discreet Hero and Ask the Lord, an indication that he intends to run only one.
