Queenledo sets sights on another

AUBURN, Wash. - Queenledo will concede from four to eight pounds to five rivals on Sunday, when she attempts to extend her domination of the 3-year-old filly division to a mile in the $40,000 Irish Day Handicap.

Queenledo, a daughter of Slewdledo trained by Tim McCanna, earned an impost of 122 pounds with authoritative wins in the six-furlong U. S. Bank Stakes in April and the 6 1/2-furlong Federal Way Handicap in May. She carried 121 pounds to a 5 3/4-length victory over No Fences in the Federal Way, and she was extending her lead through the final furlong.

Rindanica should get right setup

CALGARY, Alberta - Sunday's $50,000 Herald Gold Plate at Stampede Park is a 1 1/16-mile allowance stakes matching five of the best older horses on the grounds, plus four invaders from Hastings.

The West Coast contingent figures to supply plenty of pace in the Herald Gold Plate, with Lethal Grande, Treasured Friend, and Five Point Star figuring prominently in the early going. Their arrival does not bode well for Deputy Country, horse of the year on this circuit last year, who drew the rail but has yet to regain his spectacular front-running form of last season.

Favorites seek elusive victory

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Neither Joyride nor Cariboo Prospector won a race in 2004, but either of them can break through in the second race at Hastings Sunday, an entry-level allowance race for 3-year-olds and up that drew six horses. Won Handsome Devil should also attract a lot of attention in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Joyride and Cariboo Prospector have each started 16 times. Joyride won the Ascot Graduation as a 2-year-old and has banked $112,797. Cariboo Prospector picked up a large share of his $90,901 bankroll by finishing third in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby.

Oratory sets sights on Travers

Oratory, shown on the track at Belmont last week, worked Friday for the first time since winning the Peter Pan, getting five furlongs in 1:02.03 .

ELMONT, N.Y. - On the day before the Belmont Stakes, a race in which he probably would have been the third betting choice, Peter Pan Stakes winner Oratory worked a leisurely five furlongs at Belmont Park.

In his first work since his emphatic Peter Pan score last month, Oratory worked five furlongs Friday morning in 1:02.03 over Belmont's main track. His connections are eyeing the second half of the year for Oratory, who earned a 114 Beyer Speed Figure in winning the Peter Pan in a stakes-record time of 1:46.35.

Baze says he's had worse

ALBANY, Calif. - The furthest thought from Russell Baze's mind as he moved up aboard Cowboy Badgett in Wednesday's third race at Golden Gate Fields was that he was about to be, in his words, "planted like a tulip."

Without warning, Cowboy Badgett snapped his left ankle at the quarter pole and tossed Baze, who moments later appeared to be stepped on by Count Anomar. Baze suffered a complete fracture of his left collarbone. X-rays revealed no further problems, but Baze said Thursday his left ankle was still a bit sore.

Eurosilver primed for Foster

Eurosilver, a Grade 1 winner at 2, will try to prove he's among the top older handicap horses in the Stephen Foster Handicap.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Saturday would mark a very opportune time for Eurosilver to step up and maximize his considerable potential. As one of at least eight horses expected for the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs next Saturday, Eurosilver will be trying to leapfrog into the upper echelon of the handicap division.

"He's got the attributes to do it," said Ian Wilkes, assistant to Eurosilver's trainer, Carl Nafzger. "Now he just needs to step up and do it."

Pampered Princess can prosper at home

MIAMI - Trainer Marty Wolfson will resist the temptation to ship his graded-stakes-placed Pampered Princess out of town this summer in search of more lucrative opportunities. The incentive to stay home is heightened by spots like Sunday's $40,000 Charon Stakes, a restricted event that Pampered Princess figures to win as easily as she did the Emergency Nurse Stakes under similar conditions here five weeks earlier.

Brick Crew mindful of kin

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Will he be the next Trickey Crew?

Brick Crew sure looked a lot like Trickey Crew, his older half-brother, when he barreled down the stretch to win his debut by neck last weekend at Lone Star Park. In overcoming a slow break and wide trip in the five-furlong race for 2-year-olds, he showed some of the same talent displayed by Trickey Crew.

Outsmoken must avoid speed duel to prevail

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Sunday's allowance headliner at Louisiana Downs carries considerably more intrigue than your typical nonwinners-of-two. A diverse group of 11 will line up to go six furlongs in pursuit of the $25,000 purse.

The track's perennial leading trainer, Cole Norman, will send out two of the major contenders, Outsmoken and Royal Saint, who are uncoupled in the wagering.
