Castro's record feat still creating buzz

Jim Lisa
Jockey Eddie Castro celebrates his record nine-win afternoon.

MIAMI - The Belmont Stakes commands most of the racing world's attention this week, but not necessarily here at Calder, where jockey Eddie Castro's feat of winning 14 races in a two-day span, including a record nine on last Saturday's card, is still the talk of the town.

Castro's nine winners set a North American record for most victories by a jockey on a single program. The late Chris Antley won nine races on Oct. 31, 1987, but did so at two different racetracks, Aqueduct in the afternoon and The Meadowlands at night.

Keep an eye out for Halos Sailing Sain

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Halos Sailing Sain, a promising 3-year-old, will turn up somewhere at Monmouth Park this weekend. Trainer Joe Orseno entered Halos Sailing Sain in a six-furlong allowance race on Friday, but he is not a lock for that spot. Orseno also nominated Halos Sailing Sain to Monmouth's $60,000 Coronado's Quest Stakes for 3-year-olds going six furlongs on Saturday.

Another option for Halos Sailing Sain would be an allowance race Saturday restricted to 3-year-olds; Halos Sailing Sain would face older runners on Friday.

Stolen Prayer aims high in Fashion

ELMONT, N.Y. - If Eddie Plesa had followed the normal drill, he would be running Stolen Prayer back in the first leg of the Florida Stallion Stakes series for 2-year-old fillies. But Plesa believes Stolen Prayer could be better than that, which is why she will be running against five rivals in Thursday's $75,000 Fashion Stakes at Belmont Park.

"I think she could be something out of the ordinary," said Plesa, the trainer and part owner of Stolen Prayer.

Turf miles a look into the future

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - It may look like the Oceanside Stakes, but a pair of mile turf races for 3-year-olds Thursday at Hollywood Park is mostly a preview of coming attractions.

Leo Getz and Gold Bridle are the leading contenders in race 3, a nonwinners-of-one-other-than/optional $80,000 claiming race that is expected to produce starters for the $100,000 Oceanside to be run July 20, opening day of the Del Mar meeting.

Bashert's 98 Beyer elicits offers

Benoit & Associates
Megahertz will carry 116 pounds when she faces males in Saturday's Charles Whittingham Handicap.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The colt Bashert delivered the most impressive performance of the season by a 2-year-old maiden last Sunday at Hollywood Park, and people are taking notice. Making his second career start, Bashert won a 5 1/2-furlong race by five lengths, geared down, in a quick 1:03.49. The time earned a whopping 98 Beyer Speed Figure.

"Ninety-eight? No wonder the phone's ringing off the hook," owner-trainer Bill Currin said Tuesday. "I thought he would win, but I didn't think he would win as easy as he did."

Maidens Prayer responds for Cox

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - If the longest of journeys starts with but a single step, then Brad Cox can consider himself well under way. Cox, a former assistant to trainer Dallas Stewart, began his solo training career last fall with just three horses, but his initial successes have allowed his stable at Louisville Trackside to grow at a steady pace, and he now finds himself as an occasional player in races of decent stature.

Crowned King has options after stakes wins on dirt, turf

Crowned King is doing some damage in the handicap ranks at Louisiana Downs. He won his second straight stakes race of the meet May 30, when he rolled to an overwhelming, eight-length victory in the $50,000 Barksdale Handicap. The win came just one start after a sharp neck score in the $50,000 Alliance Handicap at the track April 30.

The Barksdale was moved to the main track from turf, while the Alliance was held on the grass, and with a resume littered with both dirt and turf stakes wins, co-owner and trainer Billy McKeever has lots of next-race options for Crowned King.
