Champs to battle at River

Two popular Ohio-bred champions are set to clash Sunday in an intriguing renewal of the $45,000 Sydney Gendelman Memorial at River Downs.

Devil Time, the 2003 Ohio horse of the year, and Ben's Reflection, champion sprinter in the state the last two seasons, lead a field of 13 entered in the 1 1/16-mile turf event for older statebreds.

For Devil Time, the Gendelman will be a return to action following a hiatus of nearly a year. In his most recent start, on July 3, Devil Time trailed a field of eight in the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park, won by Peace Rules.

King of Jazz fine-tuned for trip to Queen's Plate

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - King of Jazz, who will be making his first local appearance in next Sunday's $1 million Queen's Plate, had his final major tune-up at Churchill Downs on Friday morning.

With exercise rider Andrea Manusco in the saddle, King of Jazz breezed five furlongs in a brisk 59.20 seconds.

"I was pleased with him," said Ian Wilkes, assistant to Carl Nafzger, who trains King of Jazz for Buckram Oak Farm. "He did everything I wanted, and got everything out of it I think he needed."

Pembroke Hall must sit out after claim

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Pembroke Hall, one of Fort Erie's best-known horses, has changed owners.

Pembroke Hall was claimed for $12,500 out of his 2005 debut on Tuesday, a race in which he finished second. His new home is trainer Debbie Rombis's Against the Wind Stable.

A quarter-mile specialist, Pembroke Hall, 8, has won 16 races in 39 starts. Ten of the wins, all at two furlongs, were consecutive. The streak started at the Fort late in 2002 and ended on Aug. 2 last year, when Bermuda Triangle beat him by a head.

Iwoodificould looks like he can repeat

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Iwoodificould should be tough to beat when he defends his title in Sunday's $40,000 Free Press Stakes at six furlongs.

Like last year, Iwoodificould won an allowance race here in preparation for the Free Press. In this year's prep on May 21, Iwoodificould defeated Lord Shogun, Sir Pucker, and Northern Affair, all of whom he faces again here.

Trained by Emile Corbel, Iwoodificould will be ridden by Rohan Singh.

In Saturday's Stephen Foster, Saint Liam will be making his first start since finishing sixth in the Santa Anita Handicap 14 weeks ago.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ghostzapper has retired to the farm. Rock Hard Ten and Roses in May, last seen in March, are still moseying along the comeback trail. And Eddington stayed put in New York.

Key factor in Phipps is adaptability

ELMONT, N.Y. - The key to handicapping Saturday's $300,000 is figuring out which filly can succeed while running contrary to her preferred style.

Ashado, last year's 3-year-old filly champion, is best as a stalker, but she will likely find herself on the lead in the Grade 1 Phipps, run at 1 1/16 miles over Belmont Park's main track. Daydreaming and Society Selection are closers who will try to win by stalking Ashado. Bending Strings is a sprinter trying to prove she can route. Board Elligible is a closer who simply looks overmatched.

Fleur de Lis nearly a Louisville rerun

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Six weeks have done little to change the racing scene in the local filly and mare division. Five of the eight entrants in Saturday's Grade 2, $300,000 Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs raced in the Grade 2 Louisville Breeders' Cup on the Kentucky Oaks undercard, including its first- through third-place finishers - Shadow Cast, Island Sand, and Storm's Darling.

Nashinda vs. One for Rose, take 2

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Saturday's $132,625 Ontario Matron Handicap at Woodbine could play a pivotal role in determining the champion older filly or mare in Canada this year.

One for Rose, who was voted the Sovereign Award for top older female in each of the past two years, was soundly defeated in her 2005 debut in the Hendrie Handicap by the up-and-comer in the division, Nashinda. Both are in the 1 1/16-mile Matron, which figures to be a fascinating matchup.

Surf Cat's skill vs. Buzzards Bay's class

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - When the dazzling 3-year-old Surf Cat trounced older sprinters with a whopping 114 Beyer Speed Figure - running 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.44 - he earned the right to leap directly from a first-level allowance into a Hollywood Park graded stakes.

But when he stretches out for the first time Saturday in the Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap, Surf Cat rekindles a handicapping dilemma for which there is no simple answer - raw ability or established class?
