Consistent 'Slewshan' the favorite

EDMONTON, Alberta - Our Slewshan, favored in each of her four starts this year, heads a field of six 3- and 4-year-old fillies sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs in Sunday's Northlands Park headliner. Our Slewshan's rider in this allowance race, for nonwinners-of-two, will be Quincy Welch. She has the rail.

Trained by Dale Saunders for co-owners Crystal Meadows, Dinger Investments, and Wayne Kraft, Our Slewshan has not been worse than second this year.

Doocy hurt in Prairie spill

Jockey Tim Doocy is expected to be out of action for six to eight weeks after suffering a separated pelvis and internal injuries during the loading process of Thursday's first race at Prairie Meadows.

Doocy, who has won the last three riding titles at Prairie Meadows, was aboard a first-time starter, Chukkaluk, who reared up as she was being loaded. Doocy's right foot was stuck in the stirrup, and he was tossed to the ground in an awkward manner.

Round two: Ask Kathy vs. Secret Flame

AUBURN, Wash. - Most fans will see Sunday's six-furlong Angie C. Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs as a rematch between Ask Kathy and Secret Flame, and for good reason.

Ask Kathy, a daughter of Preakness winner Louis Quatorze from the barn of trainer Steve Bullock, won the fastest five-furlong race for 2-year-olds at the meeting on June 4, getting the distance in 57.40 seconds to prevail by 2 3/4 lengths over Secret Flame and five other maiden special weight runners. The winning Beyer Speed Figure was a 59.

B.C. Cup standouts scare others away

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A total of 118 horses have been nominated to the eight races that make up British Columbia Cup Day. All eight races, seven stakes and a starter handicap, are restricted to B.C.-breds. B.C. Cup is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 1.

With that many horses nominated, it would seem that full fields would be the order of the day. But racing secretary Lorne Mitchell will have a hard time convincing some trainers to enter against Roscoe Pito in the Classic and against Alabama Rain in the colts division of the Stallion Stakes.

Look for Red Lifesaver on front end

BOSSIER CITY, La. - An evenly matched group of nine fillies and mares line up for Sunday's $50,000 Delicada Stakes.

, third in the Suthern Accent Stakes and fourth in the Fleur de Lis Stakes earlier this season, may be a slight favorite in the 1 1/16-mile Delicada. She has been a model of consistency for trainer Steve Asmussen, and her front-running style should fit nicely in Sunday's headliner, as there is not much early foot in the field.

Aloha Mangos Kitty best in class

VALLEJO, Calif. - In the words of Yogi Berra, trainer Carmela Anderson is hoping for deja vu all over again in Sunday's $50,000 Solano County Juvenile Fillies Stakes at the Solano County Fair.

Three years ago, Anderson won the race with Market Garden after the filly won her maiden at Pleasanton. On Sunday, Anderson will send out Pleasanton graduate Aloha Mangos Kitty to meet five rivals in the 5 1/2-furlong stakes for 2-year-old Cal-bred fillies.

"It's nice to think she could do the same. Her mother ran for me," Anderson said, referring to the stakes-placed Aloha Mangos.
