B.C. Cup standouts scare others away

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A total of 118 horses have been nominated to the eight races that make up British Columbia Cup Day. All eight races, seven stakes and a starter handicap, are restricted to B.C.-breds. B.C. Cup is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 1.

With that many horses nominated, it would seem that full fields would be the order of the day. But racing secretary Lorne Mitchell will have a hard time convincing some trainers to enter against Roscoe Pito in the Classic and against Alabama Rain in the colts division of the Stallion Stakes.

Bravo expected out of hospital soon

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Joe Bravo remained hospitalized Friday after breaking his collarbone in a Thursday spill at Monmouth Park.

The meet's leading rider, Bravo was taken to Monmouth Medical Center for treatment.

"He is still body-sore," Bravo's agent, Danny Mellul, said Friday afternoon. "They are going to wean him off the painkillers and send him home tonight or tomorrow."

The injury put a crimp in another standout season for Bravo on the Jersey Shore. He holds a huge lead in the standings in a bid for an 11th title at the track.

Look for Red Lifesaver on front end

BOSSIER CITY, La. - An evenly matched group of nine fillies and mares line up for Sunday's $50,000 Delicada Stakes.

, third in the Suthern Accent Stakes and fourth in the Fleur de Lis Stakes earlier this season, may be a slight favorite in the 1 1/16-mile Delicada. She has been a model of consistency for trainer Steve Asmussen, and her front-running style should fit nicely in Sunday's headliner, as there is not much early foot in the field.

Aloha Mangos Kitty best in class

VALLEJO, Calif. - In the words of Yogi Berra, trainer Carmela Anderson is hoping for deja vu all over again in Sunday's $50,000 Solano County Juvenile Fillies Stakes at the Solano County Fair.

Three years ago, Anderson won the race with Market Garden after the filly won her maiden at Pleasanton. On Sunday, Anderson will send out Pleasanton graduate Aloha Mangos Kitty to meet five rivals in the 5 1/2-furlong stakes for 2-year-old Cal-bred fillies.

"It's nice to think she could do the same. Her mother ran for me," Anderson said, referring to the stakes-placed Aloha Mangos.

Stormy Impact eyes repeat

OMAHA, Neb. - Stormy Impact comes off a strong victory in the Dr. Fager Stakes at Arlington Park to headline a field of eight in Sunday's $100,000 Omaha Stakes. The Omaha is the highlight of the four-day Horsemen's Park Festival of Racing, which concludes Sunday.

Satan's Code looks too fast

Satan's Code, a two-time stakes winner on dirt at Colonial Downs, is only 1 for 5 on turf. But he still might be good enough to capture Sunday's $60,000 Punch Line Stakes, a five-furlong turf race.

Most of the six horses the 7-year-old Satan's Code faces in the Punch Line, restricted to Virginia-bred or Virginia-sired runners, are either unraced on grass or too slow.

, however, shows two good grass races in his last 10 starts. He was second with a 92 Beyer Speed Figure in the 2004 Punch Line and won a high-priced optional claimer at Delaware Park with a 91.

Riding for Sam-Son gives Cruise an Act II

Soaring Free makes it two straight Ontario Jockey Club wins last year.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Garry Cruise's first riding stint at Woodbine ended in a blaze of controversy after the stewards ruled he had obtained a license as an apprentice jockey under false pretenses.

But the Ontario Racing Commission apparently has decided to forgive and forget, as Cruise has been granted a jockey's license and will begin his comeback here Sunday.

"It's nice to be back," said Cruise, whose two mounts Sunday include Burst of Fire for Sam-Son Farm in the $343,200 Chinese Cultural Centre Stakes.

Try to catch Cricket Wicket

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Cricket Wicket, a speedball and turf specialist, gets top billing in Sunday's $125,000 Rainbow Connection, a five-furlong turf stakes for Ontario-sired fillies and mares. The Rainbow Connection is the last of seven stakes on the Fort Erie calendar.

Cricket Wicket, who is partly owned by her trainer, David Bell, has won four times and finished in the money in half of her 12 grass starts.

Cricket Wicket's major triumph came in the $80,000 Zadracarta at Woodbine on June 19. She hung on bravely to win the six-furlong turf race by a head.
