Delaware: Holy Ground romps

Holy Ground had not won a race on dirt since his career debut last November. But though he has raced exclusively on turf since April, the 3-year-old Holy Ground clearly loved getting back to the main track.

Facing just three rivals after seven horses scratched when the race was switched from the turf to a sealed wet-fast track, Holy Ground ($7.40) cruised to a 13 1/4-length victory in the $56,454 Stanton Stakes at Delaware Park.

Ridden by Mario Pino for trainer Michael Matz, Holy Ground covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:55.19 while recording his third victory in eight starts.

Canterbury raises funds for chapel

The appearance of Hall of Fame riders Pat Day and Sandy Hawley at Canterbury Park last weekend helped raise more than $120,000 for the construction of the Dean Kutz Memorial Chapel on the track's backstretch.

Day and Hawley signed autographs for fans on Saturday, then spoke at a fundraiser that evening in the track's Longshots Party Area. Track president Randy Sampson announced at the event that the Canterbury Park Minnesota Fund and the Sampson family would combine to match all donations dollar for dollar.

My Trusty Cat takes another crack

Horsephotos
Forest Music, with John Velazquez, is a question mark at seven furlongs.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - has since become a Grade 1 winner, but the memory of her head loss to Lady Tak in last year's Ballerina Handicap still resonates for trainer David Vance.

"She had a tough trip," Vance said Friday from Monmouth Park. "She had a horse laying on her turning for home. She finally got away from her and came up between horses and just didn't get there. She got bounced around a little bit. There was a 10-minute inquiry, but they didn't do anything. We're coming to try again."

A versatile Jaguar City to go mile

CHICAGO - There is a 400-yard Quarter Horse stakes race on Sunday at Arlington. Maybe Jaguar City would have a chance in that one, too.

Jaguar City has won 7 times in 16 starts. She has gone to the lead and come from off the pace in six-furlong sprints, and won with authority making all the pace in two-turn routes. And she will be tough to beat Sunday in a $40,000 overnight handicap, though Jaguar City must spot seven rivals as much as 10 pounds.

Purge looking cool for Iselin

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Purge could emerge as a force within the handicap ranks when he faces nine rivals Sunday in the Grade 3, $250,000 Philip H. Iselin Handicap at Monmouth Park.

Purge, trained by Todd Pletcher, has shown flashes of talent. The 4-year-old colt won a pair of Grade 2 stakes last year: the Peter Pan at Belmont Park and the Jim Dandy at Saratoga.

At times, Purge, a high-strung son of Pulpit, has been his own worst enemy. He washed out badly in Saratoga's security barns, prompting Pletcher to ship him to Monmouth.

Roscoe Pito sets sights a bit lower

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Following Roscoe Pito's powerful performance in the British Columbia Cup Classic, his trainer, John Snow, made plans to run Roscoe Pito in the Longacres Mile last weekend. Those plans changed when he saw blood trickling out of Roscoe Pito's nose following his final prep for the Mile on Aug. 13.

Instead, Snow opted to run Roscoe Pito in the $40,000 S.W. Randall Plate at Hastings Sunday. Six of the seven horses in the race are stakes winners.

Hurricane shuts Calder

Calder Race Course was forced to cancel live racing on Friday because of the effects of Hurricane Katrina, which had pounded the south Florida area the previous evening. The track did conduct simulcast wagering as scheduled on Friday. Live racing was expected to resume Saturday.

Friday's cancellation was the second resulting from a hurricane this meet. The July 10 Summit of Speed card was postponed one day because of Hurricane Dennis.
