Good racing, two breeds

A nonwinners-of-four allowance and three Quarter Horse stakes highlight a rare Sunday night program at Evangeline Downs.

All of the revenue generated by the track from Sunday evening's racing program will be donated to the Acadiana Chapter of the Red Cross Relief Fund to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The horsemen have also agreed to donate their share of the revenue.

"It's a night when our entire racing industry will unite to help our fellow Louisianians who are suffering from this horrific event," said Mike Howard, Evangeline Downs general manager.

Cat Alert ready to race

OCEANPORT, N.J. - An extra week of rest should benefit Cat Alert on Sunday in the Goldfinch Stakes at Monmouth Park, one of three $55,000 stakes on the card. The other stakes are the Continental Mile for 2-year-olds and the Thomas J. Malley Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Trainer Joe Orseno had targeted Cat Alert for last week's Omnibus Stakes, but Cat Alert suffered a stone bruise and missed the race.

"We put on a bar shoe just to be safe," Orseno said. "The foot was a little tender, but it really came around in the last few days."

Landrum takes advantage of break

When entries were taken last Sunday morning for Thursday's races at Ellis Park, apprentice jockey Christin Landrum found herself without a mount. That was before fate stepped in.

Landrum, 23, won her first race Sunday afternoon at Ellis Park, scoring aboard Obrien in ninth race. Then in the days that followed, her friend and fellow apprentice jockey Jordan Charkoudian became sick from an infected spider bite, which led to Landrum picking up three of Charkoudian's Thursday mounts.

U R Flashy, winning the Nandi, may be vulnerable going seven furlongs.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The six $125,000 yearling sales stakes to be run Sunday at Woodbine have often been races in which small-time owners and trainers have taken a shot and were able to come away with a lucrative prize.

Numerous low-priced yearling purchases, such as My Vintage Port, Barbeau Ruckus, Smiles With a Fist, and Orderofexcellence, have been victorious in these races. Owner-trainer Clyde Gholson is hoping to join the list when he sends out Grey Mirage in the seven-furlong Simcoe, for male 2-year-olds.
