ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Fifth Overture, Woodbine's hottest female sprinter, should be strongly backed in Saturday's $163,500 Seaway Stakes, a seven-furlong sprint with Grade 3 status.
Fifth Overture has prevailed in each of her three starts at the meeting since shipping in from the United States, where she had a disappointing winter/spring campaign. After romping in an $80,000 optional claimer May 28, she landed her first stakes in the seven-furlong Sweet Briar Too, earning a lifetime-best Beyer Speed Figure of 98.
AUBURN, Wash. - The Ron Crockett-owned entry of The Case Queen and Carrie With a C figures to dominate the betting in Saturday's $75,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at a mile.
The Case Queen, a daughter of Gold Case trained by Tom Wenzel, is undefeated and untested after a pair of runaway wins. She beat maiden special weight company by 6 1/4 lengths here on July 16, then came back on Aug. 13 to down allowance rivals by nearly nine lengths with 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.40, earning a 67 Beyer.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Feu Express and Arizona Drifter are the only winners among the seven 2-year-olds entered in the colts and geldings division of the $60,000 CTHS Sales Stakes at Hastings Saturday. The 6 1/2-furlong race is restricted to horses who went through a Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (B.C. Division) sale.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Boosted by strong ontrack business, Del Mar set records for all-sources handle and average daily handle at the 43-day meeting that ended on Wednesday.
The all-sources handle, combining ontrack and offtrack sources, was $608,168,297, the first time it has passed the $600 million mark. The daily average all-sources handle was $14,143,449, a gain of 4.8 percent over 2004. The average ontrack handle of $2,532,740 was a gain of 6.5 percent. DEL MAR, Calif. - Some trainers and owners whose horses ran in Sunday's first race at Del Mar have petitioned the California Horse Racing Board, claiming that the stewards' decision to declare that race no contest following an accident was in error. Only three of the seven runners completed the race following an accident heading into the far turn.
No purse money was distributed and all claims were voided. All single-race wagers and the daily double were refunded, but the pick three and place pick-all continued as though all horses in the disputed race were winners.
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan - Wind Dancer goes in search of his fifth win of the year, and fourth in a stakes, in Sunday's $15,000 Saskatchewan Derby here at Marquis Downs.
Wind Dancer and two other locals, Fargo Forbes and Lambrose, will take on a single ship-in from each neighboring province - Second Time Clever from Alberta and Hawk de Gold from Manitoba.
The Saskatchewan Derby is run at 1 1/16 miles and goes as the seventh of eight races on the meet's final card.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Ten female sprinters signed up for Saturday's $60,000 Monterey Handicap at five furlongs on the turf at Bay Meadows.
