EDMONTON, Alberta - After unsuccessful efforts in the Canadian Derby, Cinderchance and Bear Picasso are facing easier in Sunday's $50,000 Sales Stakes for 3-year-olds at Northlands Park. A field of eight has been entered for the one-mile feature.
Cinderchance earned a derby check by finishing fifth behind Vancouver invader Alabama Rain. Quincy Welch retains the mount after guiding Cinderchance to consecutive victories in a $17,500 maiden claiming race and an allowance prior to the derby.
Portland Meadows will offer 28 stakes worth $363,000 at its 2005-06 meeting, which will run 80 days from Oct. 22 through May 7.
Highlighting the schedule are the $40,000 Os West Oregon Futurity on Oregon-bred Day, Dec. 17, and the $25,000-added Portland Meadows Mile on April 8.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Owner Robert Costigan and trainer Mac Benson were fortunate enough to campaign Inish Glora, the Sovereign Award-winning champion turf female in each of the past two years. They could have another budding turf star in Arravale, a contestant in Sunday's $172,800 Natalma Stakes, a one-mile race for 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine.
Arravale closed wide from midpack to win her Aug. 13 debut in a seven-furlong maiden special weight race on the grass. She galloped out strongly under jockey David Clark.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A full field of 11 2-year-old fillies line up in the fillies division of the CTHS Sales Stakes at Hastings Sunday. It's a wide-open affair, but if One of the Feu is as good as a couple of her siblings, she could be tough to beat. The 6 1/2-furlong race is restricted to Canadian-bred fillies that have gone through a Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Sale.
COLUMBUS, Neb. - The curtain comes down on the race meet at Columbus on Sunday with a pair of 2-year-old stakes for Nebraska-breds, as well as a tribute to the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The ceremony will be presented between the fourth and fifth races Sunday and will include recognition of local police, fire and sheriff's departments, plus the National Guard. The Honor Guard will present a 21-gun salute, and "Taps" will be played by a representative from the local American Legion.
Royal Saint, who has established himself as one of the top 3-year-olds at Louisiana Downs with four wins this meet, is now being pointed for the Grade 2, $750,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Oct. 1. He earned a fees-paid berth into the race last Monday when he won the local prep, the $50,000 Prelude.
The 1 1/16-mile race was the fourth straight victory for Royal Saint, an easy-going colt who overtook pacesetter Key Issues for a three-quarter length win.
MIAMI - At 2, Cin Cin was rated near the top of the local class. That makes it all the more hard to believe that Cin Cin will be in search of his first victory as a 3-year-old Sunday, when he takes on five older rivals entered to go six furlongs in a $30,000 allowance feature at Calder.
POMONA, Calif. - Barreling through the first turn of the fourth race Friday, opening day of the Los Angeles County Fair race meet "was like a flashback," said jockey David Flores. Was it ever.
Flores is back at his old stomping grounds, and his first ride Friday marked a return for the jockey who once dominated the bullring. Flores plans to ride the entire 16-day meet for the first time since 1998. The leading Fairplex rider six straight years (1989-94), and the second-leading rider all time behind Martin Pedroza, Flores adds needed depth to the colony.
