Beau Watch wins the $40,000 Central Iowa Stakes for fillies and mares at Prairie Meadows on Saturday.

Beau Watch ($17.40) stalked the pace to the stretch before rallying to score an easy 6 1/2-length victory in the $40,000 Central Iowa Stakes for fillies and mares at Prairie Meadows.

Beau Watch, under Alex Birzer, who won half the races on the 10-race card, stopped the clock in 1:43.84 for 1 1/16 miles. Candybedandy held second by a half-length over Valliant Dancer.

Fairplex: Melanyhasthepapers wins

A three-quarter-length win by favorite Melanyhasthepapers ($7.80) in the $60,000 Phil D. Shepherd Stakes was the record 53rd Fairplex Park stakes victory for jockey David Flores.

Melanyhasthepapers won the 1 1/16-mile Shepherd in 1:44.42. Intelligent Male finished second, two lengths in front of R. Baggio.

Melanyhasthepapers is trained by Alfredo Marquez.

Lemon Maid out with ankle chip

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Lemon Maid, one of the top 3-year-old fillies on the grounds, has gone to the farm in Ocala, Fla., and will not see action again this season.

"She came out of her last race with a little chip in her ankle," said Malcolm Pierce, who trains Lemon Maid for the Live Oak Plantation of Charlotte Weber. "We played around with it a little bit, but were afraid we would do more damage if she went on. They're going to clean up that ankle down there, and we will have a nice 4-year-old."

Schoolin You upsets in Lads Stakes

AUBURN, Wash. - Schoolin You upset six rivals in Sunday's $53,910 WTBA Lads Stakes for 2-year-olds, coming from well back to prevail by half a length over second choice Raise the Bluff in 1:37.20. Coastal King got third, while 3-5 favorite Tusko T. was never prominent and finished sixth.

Schoolin You, a son of You and I from the barn of trainer Jim Penney, entered the race as a maiden after four starts. He paid $27.20 to win and earned $29,651 for his owners, Mike and Amy Feuerborn and John and Janene Maryanski. Miguel Perez rode.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Stellar Jayne continued her love affair with Belmont Park while Society Selection continued her tough-luck 4-year-old season in Sunday's Grade 1 .

Stellar Jayne took advantage of a poor start for the other speed horse, Capeside Lady, as she galloped to a gate-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the $300,000 Ruffian before 6,637 at Belmont. Society Selection, who raced between horses and was shuffled back to last at the top of the stretch, rallied to get second by four lengths over Halory Leigh.

Silver Train wins the Grade 2, $150,000 Jerome Handicap at Belmont on Sunday.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. got the best of Nick Zito again and now he may just have another horse for next month's Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.

One day after Dutrow won the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes with Saint Liam - besting the Zito-trained entry of Sir Shackleton and Commentator - Dutrow sent out Silver Train to a front-running, five-length victory over Zito's High Fly in the Grade 2, $150,000 .

It was 2 1/4 lengths back to Naughty New Yorker in third. Sir Greeley, Better Than Bonds and Awesome Twist completed the order of finish.

Beau Brass notches second Speed to Spare

EDMONTON, Alberta - Beau Brass, a 5-year-old owned by Edmonton businessman Tom White, became the first double winner of the $100,000 Speed to Spare since Arctic Laur's back-to-back scores in 1992 and 1993 when he won by a nose over the mare Raylene here at Northlands Park last Saturday.

Beau Brass ended a streak of "seconditis" through three consecutive stakes by emerging from a duel with Raylene after Deputy Country and Vancouver invader Illusive Force were overtaken in the backstretch of the 11-furlong Speed to Spare for older horses.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Shakespeare's storybook comeback from a career-threatening injury continued Sunday at Belmont Park as the talented 4-year-old colt rolled to an easy 3 3/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $200,000 .

Jerry Bailey hardly asked Shakespeare for run as he cruised past Muqbil and Meteor Storm in upper stretch and galloped home an easy winner to remain undefeated from four lifetime starts. Shakespeare's final time of 1:45.06 established a Belmont Park inner turf course record for 1 1-8 miles.

A week after owner-trainer Bart Evans won one of the richest stakes of the Retama Park meet with Almost Certain, he sent out the colt's half-brother, Wishingitwas, to win the track's $40,000 Chick Lang Jr. Memorial on Saturday night. A week ago, Almost Certain won the $100,000 Ketel One El Joven.
