Anyone's guess how 'Squire' runs

DEL MAR, Calif. - , the multiple stakes-winning sprinter, returns from a layoff of more than 14 months at Del Mar on Wednesday. His comeback has left trainer Jeff Mullins unsure what to expect.

It seems Captain Squire is something of a poker player, at least when it comes to hinting to Mullins how he is training for his return in a 5 1/2-furlong optional claimer.

"He gives you that blank face," Mullins said.

Captain Squire has five opponents, the most prominent of which is Siphonizer, the winner of the Grade 2 Del Mar Futurity in 2003.

Flower Alley and rider Angel Cordero Jr. go out for a breeze Monday at Saratoga. Flower Alley was timed in 1:00.22 for five furlongs.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - While the connections of Bellamy Road debate whether to run in the Travers or King's Bishop on Saturday, four of his would-be challengers in the $1 million Travers put in their final workouts Sunday and Monday.

Roman Ruler, the Haskell winner; Flower Alley, the Jim Dandy winner; and Reverberate, the Jim Dandy runner-up, all were on the track at the same time on a busy Monday morning under ideal conditions.

Victory aboard Borrego 'meant the world' to Gomez

DEL MAR, Calif. - Borrego was more than 100 yards past the finish of Sunday's $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar by the time jockey Garrett Gomez finished his triumphant celebration. Borrego had beaten Perfect Drift by a half-length, and at the finish Gomez looked like a furious symphony conductor, waving his whip and gesturing to the crowd. So frenzied were his actions that it looked as if his momentum would pull him out of the saddle.

Lava Man okay; 'Musique' bows tendon

DEL MAR, Calif. - Lava Man and Musique Toujours both had to be vanned from the track following the Pacific Classic on Sunday at Del Mar, but only the injury to Musique Toujours appears to be serious.

Musique Toujours, who won the Sunshine Millions Classic earlier this year, suffered a bowed tendon in his left front leg, which may preclude him from running again, trainer John Sadler said Monday morning.

"Whether it's career ending, probably," Sadler said. "But at the least he's going to get a good, long rest."

Bar shoe no big deal for Fog, Gilchrist says

Horsephotos
Lost in the Fog, Edgar Prado up, works five furlongs in 1:00.96 on Sunday at Saratoga. He will run Saturday in the Grade 1 King's Bishop.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Greg Gilchrist raised a few eyebrows Sunday morning when he revealed that for the last few weeks his undefeated sprinter, Lost in the Fog, has been training in a bar shoe to protect a quarter crack in his left hind foot.

Gilchrist said, however, that he doesn't believe the foot will be an issue when Lost in the Fog runs in Saturday's Grade 1 King's Bishop at Saratoga, and he doesn't expect Lost in the Fog to race with the bar shoe on.

No scary Iselin opponent for Presidentialaffair in '05

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Presidentialaffair ran into a monster in last year's Grade 3, $250,000 Philip H. Iselin Breeders' Cup Handicap at Monmouth Park.

With the retirement of the monster, Ghostzapper, Sunday's renewal of the Iselin won't be nearly as scary.

The 2004 Iselin was a pivotal race for Ghostzapper as he posted his first two-turn victory. Over a sloppy track on a dismal rain-soaked afternoon, Ghostzapper cruised to a 10 3/4-length win over Presidentialaffair. It was another 21 1/4 lengths back to Zoffinger in third.

Lapis wins by neck at Spa

Nearly two years since she lit up the Saratoga tote board at 50-1 in a New York-bred allowance race, Lapis pulled another upset in Monday's $66,600 for statebred fillies and mares.

Lapis, under Cornelio Velasquez, took advantage of a hot pace and rallied down the center of the course to collar Slew Motion in deep stretch and win the Union Avenue by a neck. Slew Motion, who chased the pace, settled for second, two lengths ahead of the pacesetting favorite, High Peaks.
