Natalma showcases potential stars

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Owner Robert Costigan and trainer Mac Benson were fortunate enough to campaign Inish Glora, the Sovereign Award-winning champion turf female in each of the past two years. They could have another budding turf star in Arravale, a contestant in Sunday's $172,800 Natalma Stakes, a one-mile race for 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine.

Arravale closed wide from midpack to win her Aug. 13 debut in a seven-furlong maiden special weight race on the grass. She galloped out strongly under jockey David Clark.

Filly has strong family connections

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A full field of 11 2-year-old fillies line up in the fillies division of the CTHS Sales Stakes at Hastings Sunday. It's a wide-open affair, but if One of the Feu is as good as a couple of her siblings, she could be tough to beat. The 6 1/2-furlong race is restricted to Canadian-bred fillies that have gone through a Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Sale.

Drop could be just what Cin Cin needs

MIAMI - At 2, Cin Cin was rated near the top of the local class. That makes it all the more hard to believe that Cin Cin will be in search of his first victory as a 3-year-old Sunday, when he takes on five older rivals entered to go six furlongs in a $30,000 allowance feature at Calder.

Flores glad to be back at bullring

POMONA, Calif. - Barreling through the first turn of the fourth race Friday, opening day of the Los Angeles County Fair race meet "was like a flashback," said jockey David Flores. Was it ever.

Flores is back at his old stomping grounds, and his first ride Friday marked a return for the jockey who once dominated the bullring. Flores plans to ride the entire 16-day meet for the first time since 1998. The leading Fairplex rider six straight years (1989-94), and the second-leading rider all time behind Martin Pedroza, Flores adds needed depth to the colony.

Atto isn't only game in town

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Most of the scuttlebutt this week will center on next Sunday's Grade 1, $1 million Atto Mile on turf for 3-year-olds and upward.

But the Canadian Handicap and the Summer, a pair of Grade 2 turf stakes on the Atto Mile undercard, would stand as features in their own right.

The Canadian, a 1 1/8-mile race worth $300,000, is the division's major local stepping-stone to the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes, a 1 1/4-mile turf race worth a record $1 million on Oct. 23.

Clyde in position to make history

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Terry Clyde has reached the top of the trainer standings at Hastings and leads a strong list of female trainers here, including Barb Heads, Cindy Krasner, Toni Jacobson Cloutier, and Janet Armstrong.

Clyde, 43, is on a roll right now, and with 27 wins she is tied with Gary Demorest for the lead in the trainer standings. There is still a lot of racing left, but Clyde is in a good position to become the first woman to earn leading trainer honors at Hastings.
