Jockey Duane Salvino rode his 1,000th winner Friday at Columbus when he guided Princess Waki ($14.80) to victory in the fifth race.
Hot Storm, ridden by Jesus Castanon, drew clear in the final furlong after pressing all the pace and captured the 17th running of the $63,750 Weekend Delight Stakes on Saturday at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.
Hot Storm, a 3-year-old Stormy Atlantic filly trained by Dallas Stewart, returned $11.80 as fourth choice in a field of nine fillies and mares. Dewey's Trick, a 21-1 shot, finished 3 1/2 lengths behind the winner in second, and it was another three lengths back in third to Born to Dance. Injustice, the 9-5 favorite, was fourth.
Last year, Umpateedle was no match for Ebony Breeze in the Grade 3 at Delaware Park. On Saturday, it was the other way around.
Umpateedle, a 6-year-old mare owned by Michael Gill and trained by Mark Shuman, pulled a 10-1 upset in the $200,000 Endine, a race in which she finished second in 2004. Sensibly Chic, the 2-1 second choice, was 2 1/2 lengths behind Umpateedle in second, followed by Ebony Breeze, the 6-5 favorite.
Talk about consistent - the 6-year-old gelding Honorable Man, who has finished out of the money only once in his career, became a stakes winner with a 3 1/4-length victory in the $100,000 Charles H. Hadry Stakes at Laurel Park.
Racing in seventh early under Steve Hamilton, Honorable Man ($12.60) swung five wide and drew off in the stretch as pacesetter Saay Mi Name gave way to be second. Cherokee's Boy was two lengths behind Saay Mi Name in third.
Honorable Man covered one mile in 1:36.77 for trainer Ronald Cartwright and owners Albert and Eric Wirth.
Due to Win Again finished strongly after stalking the early pace and successfully defended her title in the $100,000 River Cities Breeders' Cup at Louisiana Downs. Chitchat Chitchat, the 6-5 favorite, turned in a late run to be second, followed by longshot Go Girlfriend Go.
Ridden by Guy Smith, Due to Win Again ($8.40) raced closest to pacesetter Slewpy's Storm, then put the early speed away and drew clear, having enough left to hold the runner-up safe at the wire by 1 1/2 lengths. The final time for 1 1/16 miles on firm turf was 1:42.40.
Fifth Overture ($3) scored her fourth victory in a row in the Grade 3, $175,800 at Woodbine.
Fifth Overture stalked the pace along the inside under Robert Landry, as 16-1 shot La Trillium set splits of 22.83 and 45.72 seconds in the seven-furlong contest.
Fifth Overture came between rivals on the turn and hit the front at the eighth pole before drawing off for a three-length score. Silver Bird rallied for second, and La Trillium easily held third in the seven-horse field of fillies and mares. The final time was 1:21.88.
Freeroll, the longest shot in a nine-horse field, rallied from last position while wide to win the $60,000 Lighthouse Stakes at Monmouth Park under jockey Julian Pimentel. Freeroll was up in the final furlong to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Palaestra, who in turn had 1 1/2 lengths on third-place finisher Ballroom Deputy.
Freeroll ($55.60) was making her first start since winning an off-the-turf allowance at Monmouth by seven lengths on June 30 as the even-money choice. Trained by Mark Hennig, she covered 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in 1:43.34.
Sinbad the Sailor, winless in six starts dating back to November 2004, paid $71.50 after outgaming 3-5 favorite Top Shoter in a hard-fought, stretchlong battle in the 1 1/16-mile Gennesee Valley Breeders' Handicap for New York-breds at Finger Lakes. Top Shoter, who set the early pace, dug in when challenged by the winner on the far turn, then was nipped for second by a head in deep stretch by the late-running S. Cherry Legacy. Sinbad the Sailor, who won the $50,000 race by a neck, was timed in 1:43.57.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Coming off extremely successful 3-year-old campaigns in which they both won multiple Grade 1 races, Society Selection and Stellar Jayne had high expectations placed on them as they entered their 4-year-old seasons.
For various reasons, neither filly has yet to realize her promise. But there is still time. With three Grade 1 races in the next seven weeks, culminating in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff on Oct. 29, both Society Selection and Stellar Jayne have an opportunity to finish strong.
ELMONT, N.Y. - He is not as accomplished as High Fly or Naughty New Yorker. He hasn't thrown in that freaky race as have Sir Greeley and Silver Train. But Better Than Bonds is an improving 3-year-old who could upset Sunday's Grade 2, $150,000 Jerome Handicap at Belmont Park.
is winless in four stakes tries, and comes off a decent third-place finish behind the undefeated Lost in the Fog in the Grade 1 King's Bishop at Saratoga.
