You'll get a price in this Super Derby

BOSSIER CITY, La. - This one's for the bettors.

The Super Derby has had its share of short-priced winners, with horses like Alysheba, Sunday Silence, and Tiznow among the 12 winning favorites in 25 runnings of the richest race of the meet at Louisiana Downs. But this year, there is no such standout among the 10 horses in the Grade 2, $750,000 race. Real Dandy was made the 7-2 favorite on the morning-line, the highest morning-line favorite in the history of the race, which has had 14 odds-on favorites since its debut in 1980.

Sheri's Rubiano looks the goods in Harrah's Juvenile

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Sheri's Rubiano, perfect on the turf and the only two-time winner in the field, heads up the cast of 13 2-year-olds entered in Saturday's Harrah's Juvenile Stakes. The 1 1/16-mile race over the Louisiana Downs turf course carries a Breeders' Cup-subsidized $125,000 purse and is one of three stakes on the Super Derby undercard.

El Don to get tested by Adreamisborn

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Trainer Marty Jones wouldn't mind if Saturday's $125,000 Grade 3 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Handicap were simply a rerun of the California Turf Championship.

The Jones-trained won that $100,000 turf race at one mile on the grass here, and Saturday's 1 1/8-mile turf race sets up the same way. Shadow Raider will probably take the lead again, and may not get much more early pressure than he did in the California Turf Championship on Labor Day. El Don will be sitting back and will make his move in the lane.

"That would be just fine with me," Jones said.

Cordero's back in Cotillion

Horsephotos
Angel Cordero Jr., 62, who hasn't ridden in a race since 1995, will come out of retirement for one day.

Not since Bill Shoemaker was in the midst of his farewell tour in 1989 has there been so much buzz about a Hall of Fame jockey making a guest appearance at Philadelphia Park.

Angel Cordero Jr., who has 7,057 victories in his career, will ride unbeaten Indian Vale for trainer Todd Pletcher in Saturday's Grade 2, $300,000 Cotillion Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Cordero, 62, exercises horses in the morning for Pletcher but retired from riding in 1992 following a near-fatal spill. He made a brief comeback in 1995, going 0 for 6 in New York.

No cinch in Flying Pidgeon

Senor Swinger takes a shot on Polytrack

The conventional wisdom about the new Polytrack surface at Turfway Park is that turf horses handle it as well as, or better than, dirt horses.

Hawthorne: Iosilver brings big Beyer

Having opened the fall meet last weekend with its showcase event, the Hawthorne Gold Cup, Hawthorne's schedule of major races quickly draws thin.

In fact, from last weekend until Nov. 12, Hawthorne will host just one program on which a stakes race will be carded. That will be Oct. 15, when the Hawthorne Derby and Hawthorne Oaks interrupt an otherwise lengthy stakes drought.

Separato again tries to beat Trapped Again

Trapped Again and Separato, separated by no more than a length in two stakes at Delaware Park earlier this season, meet for the third time since mid-July in Saturday's $100,000 Kelso Handicap at Delaware Park.

The Kelso, at 1 3/16 miles on the main track, drew a field of eight older horses.

Laurel: Salary Cap moves up

Five of the seven 3-year-olds scheduled to run in the $60,000 Sonny Hine at Laurel Park Saturday also were entered in the $100,000 Gallant Bob Handicap at Philadelphia Park the same day, throwing a cloud over the field for both races.

One certain starter for the six-furlong Hine is Salary Cap, a six-time winner in 11 starts who makes a huge class jump to stakes company after crushing conditioned claimers by nearly 16 lengths on Sept. 9, earning a career-best 95 Beyer. He was claimed out of that race for $25,000 by trainer A. Ferris Allen III.

Finger Lakes: 'Marian' vulnerable

Based on Beyer Figures, Canadian shipper Blushing Marian is by far the fastest filly in the $50,000 Finger Lakes Juvenile Fillies.

Although Blushing Marian won her last start by 11 1/2 lengths and her 69 Beyer is more than 20 points better than the next-best figure among her nine rivals, there is reason to be cautious about taking a short price. Blushing Marian's big figure came over a wet, sealed track in maiden claiming company. She earned only a 15 Beyer in her career debut against straight maidens.
