Extra yards a big plus for My List

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Nick Gonzalez had to go to his bench for Sunday's $125,000 My Dear Stakes at Woodbine when his young stable star Miss Willow came up with a shin problem.

Gonzalez entered My List in the five-furlong dash for 2-year-old fillies, even though she's a maiden. In her debut, My List was second to Miss Willow in a rapidly run race at 4 1/2-furlongs, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 69. She returned to finish a closing fifth in another 4 1/2-furlong maiden special May 27.

Gonzalez said My List was sold to Tucci Stable just before her second start.

Team 'Long Legs' looks formidable

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Trainer Chad Torevell and owner Bill Maulding have teamed up to win the North Dakota Derby twice before, last year with Northrnimprovement and in 2002 with Winaferd. Sunday, they'll be odds-on to do it again with Dakota Long Legs here at Assiniboia Downs.

Nine 3-year-olds will go to post in the restricted one-mile North Dakota Derby, which offers a purse of $20,000.

Jader gets test to gauge talent

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Roger Attfield has won turf stakes this year with Noble Stella and Pellegrino, both of whom are owned by Gary Tanaka.

Attfield will be looking to make it three of a kind when he sends out Jader for Tanaka in Monday's $300,000 King Edward Breeders' Cup at Woodbine.

Jader, a 4-year-old colt, will be making his first local start in the Grade 2 King Edward, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-olds and upward.

"I want to see what kind of horse he is," said Attfield. "This is the only place I can run him; he has no conditions."

Kimchi, winning the Woodbine Oaks, leads a field of six in Sunday's $250,000 Bison City.

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Kimchi and Sweet Breanna, the one-two finishers in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks on June 12, will resume their rivalry Sunday in Fort Erie's $250,000 Bison City Stakes.

The 1 1/16-mile Bison City, which drew a field of six, follows the Woodbine Oaks as the second leg in the crown series for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies. The series concludes with the $250,000 Wonder Where, a 1 1/4-mile turf race at Woodbine on July 29.

Navesink classiest in Van Clief

Navesink, a multiple graded stakes winner early in his career who has raced only five times since June 2003, brings a ton of back class into Sunday's $60,000 Daniel Van Clief Stakes at Colonial Downs.

The 1 1/16-mile turf race drew a field of nine older Virginia-breds.

In his younger days, Navesink was good enough to win the Grade 2 Jamaica and the Grade 3 Kent. Now 8, he hasn't faced stakes-caliber horses since finishing eighth in the $60,000 Battlefield at Monmouth in June 2005.

Delaware: Cat Criminal eyes Leonard Richards

In his first start against older horses last weekend, Cat Criminal didn't run quite as fast or win quite as easily as he did when he crushed a field of maidens by 10 3/4 lengths and earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure in his 3-year-old debut. But trainer Steve Klesaris was nevertheless thrilled with Cat Criminal's wire-to-wire 1 1/4-length victory - worth a 93 Beyer - in a first-level allowance at Delaware Park last Saturday.

Klesaris was so impressed, in fact, that he said he intends to point Cat Criminal to the Grade 3, $300,000 Leonard Richards Stakes on July 16 at Delaware.

'He's the Man' returns home

MIAMI - Yes He's the Man has won 4 of his 6 career starts, a couple of stakes, and is perfect over his home base of Calder Race Course. So it should come as no surprise that trainer David Braddy recently shipped the 3-year-old Yes He's the Man back to south Florida from New Jersey to take a shot at the $300,000 Carry Back Stakes on July 15.

Cincinnatian may provide Sybles Angel with reversal

Tommeyesgold and Sybles Angel, two of the leading Ohio-bred 3-year-old fillies, will face each other for the fifth time in their careers in the $50,000 Cincinnatian Stakes at River Downs on Sunday. It would be a mistake, however, to refer to this as a rivalry, as the outcome of their previous meetings have been especially one-sided.

Lincoln: Touchonemore the standout

Unstarted 2-year-olds have a way of making their trainers confident, but so do good-sized purses. One of these reasons might explain why a field of nine will line up for Sunday's $20,000-added State Fair Futurity at Lincoln, even though only one maiden race has attracted enough entrants to be run at this meet. Five of the Futurity's entrants will be making their first career start, while the other four faced each other in a June 17 maiden race here.

Lemons Forever, winning the Kentucky Oaks at 47-1, enters Saturday's Mother Goose off an eight-week layoff.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Three of the top 3-year-old fillies in training arrived in New York from Kentucky on Thursday afternoon for Saturday's Grade 1, $250,000 at Belmont Park. One could leave here with a claim as the midseason divisional leader.

Kentucky Oaks winner Lemons Forever, multiple Grade 1 stakes winner Bushfire, and multiple Grade 3 stakes winner Joint Effort head a strong seven-horse field entered for the Mother Goose. The Mother Goose shares top billing with the Grade 1, $400,000 Suburban on a 10-race card.
