A dozen willing to challenge Fog

MIAMI - Reigning Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Lost in the Fog may not have scared away any of the opposition, but the freakishly fast Dubai Escapade obviously did when entries were drawn Monday for Saturday's $1.96 million Summit of Speed program at Calder Race Course.

A surprisingly large field of 13 horses, including Lost in the Fog, passed the entry box for the Grade 2, $500,000 Smile Sprint while only seven fillies and mares, led by the once-beaten Dubai Escapade, will contest the Grade 1, $500,000 Princess Rooney Handicap.

Hystericalady will ship in for the northern California powerhouse stable of Jerry Hollendorfer after winning last month's Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks.

Meet starts free of development talk

The cloud of doubt hovering over the Solano County Fair in recent years has been lifted as the track begins its 2006 meeting Wednesday.

Plans for redevelopment of the fair property that would have eliminated horse racing have fallen apart. A proposal by the Mills Corporation to redevelop the 150-acre fair property has been rejected by both the fair board and the county board of supervisors.

Stone Rain looking like a sound investment

There was a method to the seeming madness when trainer Billy Morey claimed Stone Rain for $80,000 at Golden Gate Fields on March 10. A 5-year-old gelding, Stone Rain finished fourth behind comebacking Spanish Chestnut that day.

"It raised a lot of eyebrows when we first took him," Morey said. "I was content with $80,000. We put a partnership together with four of us involved so that someone wouldn't be sticking his neck out for $80,000."

A healthy Strike Softly shows true ability

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Strike Softly, one of many victims of the virus that made the rounds at Woodbine last month, obviously didn't put her best foot forward in the 1 1/8-mile Woodbine Oaks on June 11.

And that made Strike Softly something of a question mark here heading into last Sunday's $152,000 Ontario Damsel, a 6 1/2-furlong turf race for Ontario-foaled 3-year-old fillies.

"I didn't really know what to expect from her," said Mark Frostad, who trains Strike Softly for owner-breeder Sam-Son Farm.

Strike Softly saved ground in a stalking position under Todd Kabel in the six and a half-furlong turf dash. She found her best stride at the eighth pole, and prevailed by a length over front-running A Touch of Glory, the 2-1 favorite.

Our Madison closed belatedly for third in the 10-horse field of Ontario-foaled 3-year-old fillies. The final time was 1:15.29 seconds.
