Same level, harder spot for Suaviter

CHICAGO - Of the many horses Chicago's leading owner, Frank Calabrese, has claimed this season, Suaviter ranks among the best. Taken out of a win in a $25,000 claimer May 26 at Arlington, Suaviter was back three weeks later and won by more than three lengths while racing for a $62,500 tag in a race also open to third-level allowance horses. There was talk of a trip to Canterbury Park for a stakes run, but Suaviter has wound up in Arlington's featured eighth race Thursday, a race at the same class level as her recent victory.

Distinct edge to Leparoux on turf

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Throughout the meet, jockeys Julien Leparoux and Rafael Bejarano have been nearly inseparable atop the Churchill Downs rider standings. Through last Sunday, with one week of racing remaining, Leparoux held an 80-78 lead in victories.

Break down their numbers riding on turf and dirt, and their statistics differ noticeably. Leparoux has been the most successful turf rider this meet, winning 26 races, compared with 13 for Bejarano. Bejarano holds a 65-54 edge on the main track.

Turf sprint chute debuts

OCEANPORT, N.J. - The turf sprint, always a popular staple at Monmouth Park, returns Thursday in the $40,000 second-level allowance feature for fillies and mares.

Grass racing resumed on the Jersey Shore late last month with the introduction of a brand-new course. All of the turf races thus far have been at two turns.

Thursday's 5 1/2-furlong race will be the track's first from an infield chute, the most prominent addition during the $6 million course renovation. On the old course, sprints started on the backstretch.

Youngsters at their best

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The 2-year-olds Be a Resident and Wrenice put on a show during Stars of Texas Day last Saturday at Lone Star Park, turning in two of the most impressive performances on a program of six restricted stakes. Each won a division of the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes, and each earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure.

Bamboo Gap may go to Ellis

Trainer Sam David Jr. was going over stakes schedules on Tuesday morning, looking for a spot for Bamboo Gap, who won his third straight race over the Louisiana Downs turf course last Saturday when he wired a field of 3-year-olds in the $50,000 Excalibur.

David has already targeted the $75,000 Donnie Wilhite Memorial on the Super Derby undercard here Sept. 23 as an objective for Bamboo Gap, but is searching for a race before then and has an eye on Ellis Park in Kentucky.

Setting's ideal for A Classic Life

AUBURN, Wash. - A Classic Life became the first horse at the meeting to win two stakes when she scored in Sunday's $40,000 King County Handicap for fillies and mares at a mile. Her previous stakes win at the stand, the 6 1/2-furlong Washington State Legislators Handicap, made her the first horse in Emerald Downs history to win added-money events at the ages of 2, 3, and 4.

Surely her most impressive accomplishment, however, is that she has now won 7 of her 8 starts at Emerald.

A 5-year-old trained by Nick Zito for owner Tracy Farmer, Commentator makes only his 10th career start in the Mugatea. He has won 7 of 9 starts, including a third-level allowance at Belmont by 16 1/2 lengths and the Grade 1 Whitney by a neck over eventual Horse of the Year Saint Liam, a race many considered the best of the year.

Sweet Way's second try at first start

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Sweet Way makes her first start in Wednesday's fifth race at Hollywood Park, but she has already had an eventful meeting this summer.

On June 18, Sweet Way was kicked by a pony in the post parade a few minutes before a seven-furlong maiden race. She was vanned off after the incident, but suffered only a bruise between the hock and stifle of her left rear leg, trainer John Shirreffs said.

"She was very fortunate," Shirreffs said. "It didn't break the skin."
