Orphaned filly after 2nd stakes win

Cookin's Cast and her 20-year-old owner, Christie Love, each scored her first stakes win when Cookin's Cast captured the $50,000 JEH Stallion Station Stakes at Lone Star Park at 15-1. Now Cookin's Cast, who has gone from orphan to stakes winner, is being pointed for next month's $65,000 Allen Bogan Memorial.

The one-mile race for fillies and mares has long been a goal for Cookin's Cast, a 5-year-old mare, who rallied from sixth to win the JEH by a neck on April 29. It was a thrilling victory for Love, and her father, Alan Love Sr., who trains Cookin's Cast.

Eppler's local form enticing

You have to like trainer Mary Eppler's chances when she runs a horse in a turf sprint at Colonial Downs under jockey Horacio Karamanos.

Eppler has had eight such starters since 2002, winning with five and running second once. On Saturday, she sends out another - Bright Gold, in a field of 12 fillies and mares in the $60,000 Buckland Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf.

, 6, enters the race with the highest lifetime earnings in the field by far and with six Beyer Speed Figures in the 90's in the past year, twice as many as any of her rivals.

Eight who could use a spark

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Finding the winner in Sunday's six-furlong allowance feature at Louisiana Downs may come down to deciding who can recapture the most of his once-promising form. Four of the eight runners in the race, a first-level allowance for Louisiana-breds, are coming off a layoff of 60 days or more. The other four runners have more recent starts, but have not displayed the talent that got them their wins.

Gleason has tough pair

AURORA, Colo. - Trainer Kenneth Gleason appears to hold the upper hand in Sunday's $25,000-added Molly Brown Handicap at Arapahoe Park. Gleason will saddle both Vannacide and Ladysgotthelooks in the six-furlong race for fillies and mares, which drew a field of seven.

Both horses prepped well here in allowance company on opening weekend for Gleason, who is always a force in the local stakes ranks.

Michael Burns Photo Ltd.
Shillelagh Slew comes into Sunday's Queen's Plate with only one prep under his belt.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Mike DePaulo has always believed that Shillelagh Slew was something special. That theory will be put to the test here at Woodbine on Sunday, when Shillelagh Slew makes just his second start of the season and his first in eight weeks in the 1 1/4-mile .

"Would I like to have another race under him?" asked DePaulo. "We've just got to make the best with what we have."

Singspiel lures two big names

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Singspiel, a $100,000 overnight stakes for 3-year-olds and upward, may be playing third fiddle behind the $1 million Queen's Plate and the $200,000 Highlander here Sunday. But the Singspiel has attracted some major players, including Pellegrino and Jambalaya, both of whom will be looking to use this 1 1/2-mile turf race as a springboard to the new Grade 2, $700,000 Northern Dancer Breeders' Cup Turf at the same distance here July 23.

Forster looks to get one in win column

AUBURN, Wash. - Time and chance happeneth to all men, according to the Bible, and so do losing streaks. Just ask Dave Forster, who has ranked among the most successful trainers in the Northwest for the past 50 years.

Forster, who turned 70 last month, has saddled 131 stakes winners at Hastings, where he bases his string, and he has shipped to Emerald Downs for another 21 stakes wins and to the Canadian prairie tracks for dozens more.

None of that has prevented Forster from starting his 2006 campaign 0 for 37, which he finds galling but not discouraging.

Lt. Governors coming up strong

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The Grade 3, $125,000 Lieutenant Governors next Saturday will easily have the best field of the year. Fourteen horses have been nominated to the Lieutenant Governors, the first major race of the season, and it appears that at least nine will start, possibly 11.

Returning to defend his title will be R. Associate, who is coming off an upset win in the Emerald Downs Handicap on June 18. Last year, R. Associate finished a troubled third in the Emerald Downs Handicap before winning the Lieutenant Governors.
