Colonial: Debbie Sue upsets

Debbie Sue, winless in four previous starts on turf and idle since November, overcame near-disaster to upset the $60,000 Brookmeade for Virginia-bred fillies and mares at Colonial Downs.

Ridden by Luis Garcia for trainer Hamilton Smith, the 5-year-old Debbie Sue ($36.20) had only one horse beaten in the field of 12 early and clipped heels at the three-eighths pole. She maintained her balance but lost a lot of ground. Debbie Sue recovered and rallied strongly through the stretch, took command late, and drew clear of runner-up Rumbling Girl by 1 1/4 lengths.

Untouched Talent goes untouched in the stretch as jockey Roberto Gonzalez takes a look back before crossing the wire in the Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton on July 1st.

Untouched Talent ($4.40), a $500,000 purchase at the Barretts 2-year-olds in training sale in March, captured the $42,850 Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes in her career debut at the Alameda County Fair on Saturday.

A daughter of Storm Cat out of the A.P. Indy mare Parade Queen, Untouched Talent was hustled early from the rail in the five-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies. She was a head behind stablemate Heiress Apparent as four fillies gunned down the backstretch heads apart.

'Hood' fast out of gate

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Monday's feature at the Alameda County Fair, a first-level allowance sprint for 3-year-olds, could be a stakes race. Among the seven in the six-furlong race are Mid-

westerner and Wilmore, who are stakes-placed and have met the best of their generation in these parts. But they may not have faced a horse as fast as Monday rival Hollywood Hood.

Trainer Michael Lenzini said Hollywood Hood is the fastest horse out of the gate that he has ever trained.

Jazil getting into gear

ELMONT, N.Y. - Belmont Stakes winner Jazil began preparing for the second half of the season by working four furlongs in 49.63 seconds Saturday morning at Belmont Park. What race Jazil is working toward is a little unclear.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said that while he is training Jazil with the idea of running in the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on July 29, he said it is quite possible Jazil could simply train up to the $1 million Travers there on Aug. 26.
