Canterbury: Glitter Star favored

Glitter Star will try statebred rivals for the first time this season when she faces eight Minnesota-bred fillies and mares in the $40,000 Princess Elaine Stakes at Canterbury Park. The race is at 1 1/16 miles on turf.

Minnesota's champion 3-year old filly last year, Glitter Star demonstrated her form could travel when she won an optional claiming event on the turf at Tampa Bay Downs in March.

Lincoln: Frogman Henry heads cast

Frogman Henry is the likely favorite when a field of 10 older horses meet in the $17,500 State Fair Board Handicap at a mile and 70 yards at Lincoln.

Patty Jo Braden trains Frogman Henry, who worked his way through his conditions and then faced the top horses on the grounds this season. He came up three-quarters of a length short to Hez Comin Thru in the six-furlong President's Cup in his last start and appears poised for a top effort here. R. D. Williams has the ride at 119 pounds.

Lone Star: Three turf races

Turf is the theme of the card at Lone Star Park on Tuesday, with the three richest races on the program to be run on the grass. The action starts in the fourth with a first-level allowance at one-mile and Communion should be a slight favorite over the streaking Hot Foot Slew.

Communion made his turf debut last out and was second by a half-length to James Ready Magic, who has since won another allowance. Communion earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 80, the highest last-race number in the field. Trainer Donnie Von Hemel has given the mount to Alfredo Juarez Jr.

Louisiana Downs: 'Magic' act

Magic Sunset, a perfect 2 for 2 over the Louisiana Downs main track, will attempt to take another step through his conditions in Tuesday's $32,000 optional-allowance headliner. The likely favorite, he will square off against five other Louisiana-breds at six furlongs.

Trainer Tom Amoss claimed Magic Sunset for Harris Thoroughbreds from his debut, a $25,000 statebred maiden claimer at the Fair Grounds meeting at Louisiana Downs last November. The new connections wheeled Magic Sunset back in a maiden special affair a month later and the result was a two-length victory.

Out of Gwedda vs. only 3

ELMONT, N.Y. - Because of a lack of opportunities, trainer Todd Pletcher hasn't been able to showcase his full arsenal of juvenile talent this spring at Belmont Park, but what he has sent out has certainly been impressive.

Pletcher has won the only two open-company races run this meet for juvenile colts with Out of Gwedda and Scat Daddy. While Scat Daddy awaits a probable start in the Sanford Stakes later this month at Saratoga, Out of Gwedda heads a compact field entered for Tuesday's $100,000 Tremont Stakes at Belmont.

Nicole's Dream back in form

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Nicole's Dream's turf course record is safe after all. Now, maybe she'll go out and set another one.

A nice filly named Tally Ho Dixie eclipsed Nicole's Dream's 56.38-second standard for about five furlongs on turf in an ordinary allowance race June 23, running a somewhat unbelievable time of 55.76 seconds. This weekend, Arlington made official what had seemed clear: the time was too fast (timed from video, Tally Ho Dixie ran 57.40), and Nicole's Dream's name stays on the books.

Whos Crying Now wants rain

MIAMI - Whos Crying Now has not hit the board in six career starts on turf and was never a factor when he finished fifth in the Band Is Passing Stakes on the turf in his previous start. So luckily for Whos Crying Now, Tuesday's $100,000 Mecke Handicap, scheduled to be run at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, is likely to be moved to the main track.

Monmouth allowed to race

An appellate court in New Jersey ruled Sunday that Monmouth Park and The Meadowlands could remain open through the end of business on Tuesday, avoiding a holiday closing threatened by the state's unprecedented shutdown of government.

The ruling came on a motion filed by the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and representatives of the state's Standardbred horsemen.

The decision allowed Monmouth to proceed with its Monday and Tuesday cards and meant the resumption of simulcasting and account wagering throughout the state.
