Distance perfect for 'Amethyst'

AUBURN, Wash. - Seven evenly matched fillies and mares, each eligible to be claimed for $30,000, vie at six furlongs in Friday's feature race at Emerald Downs. Star Amethyst may be a slight favorite off her affinity for the six-furlong distance.

Royalty Boy looks to end losing streak

EDMONTON, Alberta - Several starters from recent stakes, including the July 8 Spangled Jimmy, are dropping into a 1 1/16-mile optional claimer here at Northlands Park on Friday.

Royalty Boy drew the outside post in the field of 10. Trained by Bruce Phelan, Royalty Boy closed from the back of the field to edge Bonspiel for third in the Spangled Jimmy. Royalty Boy, winless since his 3-year-old campaign in 2004, was coming off a fourth-place finish in the Herald Gold Plate at Calgary a month earlier.

Indy Lead drops into win spot

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The last time Indy Lead won was April 19, 2003 when he led from start to finish to win a second-level allowance race at Keeneland. Indy Lead doesn't have a lot of speed now, but it looks like he has a very good chance of winning the seventh race at Hastings Friday evening. The $25,000 claiming race for 3-year-olds and up drew a field of seven.

This will be the first time Indy Lead has run in a straight claiming race, and he should be one of the favorites. Streak of Light and Tacky appear to be the ones to beat.

Giacomo back for more in San Diego

Horsephotos
Giacomo will attempt a three- or four-race campaign before the end of the year, including Saturday's $250,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. The Southern California track opened Wednesday with its usual fun-loving and festive crowd.

DEL MAR, Calif. - More than 14 months after his upset win in the Kentucky Derby and four months since his last start, Giacomo will make a comeback in Saturday's $250,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar.

The race is the first of three or four expected starts for Giacomo before the end of the year, when he is scheduled to go to stud in Kentucky. For the rest of the year, the goal for trainer John Shirreffs is to prove that Giacomo is a genuine top-class performer and that his Kentucky Derby win at 50-1 was not a fluke.

Pletcher a $100M kid

Hoofprints, Inc.
Adieu, winning the Delaware Oaks, will make her next start in the Monmouth BC Oaks or the Alabama.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Even before last weekend, when he won four stakes and more than $1 million in purses, Todd Pletcher had become the eighth trainer in Thoroughbred history to surpass the $100 million mark in earnings. And he's only 39 years old.

Including a victory by Mercurius at Delaware Park on Wednesday, Pletcher's stable has earned $102,532,952 since it opened in late 1995. That number also includes $850,000 in purse money won in Dubai in March. This year, Pletcher's runners have earned $14,750,957 as he readies to break his 2005 record of $20,867,842.

Mighty Cahill shows his stuff

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Mighty Cahill finally lived up to the promise he showed when he won a maiden special weight race by 11 lengths in his debut as a 2-year-old last September. Under a heady ride by apprentice Mario Gutierrez, Mighty Cahill came from slightly off the pace to win the Burnaby Breeders' Cup by a widening 4 3/4 lengths last Saturday and stamped himself as a serious contender for the Grade 2, $250,000 B.C. Derby Sept. 24.

Queen City Oaks wide open

A near-capacity field of 13 Ohio-bred fillies were entered for Saturday's $100,000 Queen City Oaks, and with no standout in the division, the 1 1/8-mile Oaks is shaping up to be an excellent betting race.

Tommeyesgold, Money Card, and Luvaprivate, who have all won stakes this year, are among the likely favorites. Another expected to garner support is Cryptoquip, the only Oaks entrant not based in Ohio, who will ship in from Churchill Downs. His trainer, Tom Proctor, won with his only other starter this meet.

Delta Downs track report

Delta Downs officials have set Friday, Dec. 1, as the date for the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Jackpot for 2-year-olds. The race was not run last year because of the damage Hurricane Rita caused to the Vinton, La., facility last September.

Delta is scheduled to open an 88-date Thoroughbred meet on Nov. 1, to run through March 31.
