Finlandia ends stakes frustration in Yaddo

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - There was a stakes race with Finlandia's name on it after all.

After losing her four previous stakes tries, including her last three New York-bred stakes by a combined two lengths, Finlandia finally broke through Saturday at Saratoga by winning the $113,100 Yaddo Stakes by one length over a late-rallying Sabellina, the 8-5 favorite. It was another half-length back to Elisa's Energy in third.

On the Bus, the 2005 Yaddo winner who was making the last start of her career, finished sixth, beaten seven lengths. On the Bus is in foal to Kitten's Joy.

Travers contenders work to beat rain

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - With rain moving into Saratoga on Saturday and forecast to last into Sunday morning, several trainers moved workouts up a day for their Travers contenders.

Five of the seven horses expected to run in the $1 million Travers here Aug. 26 put in workouts Saturday morning at Saratoga and Churchill.

A clean start would send Sweet Sweet on her way

Sweet Sweet, winning the Arctic Queen, looks like the one to catch in Monday's Union Avenue.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Sweet Sweet had a sour start to the Saratoga meet, stumbling badly at the break of the Rogues Walk Stakes on opening day before chasing a hot pace and tiring to last as the 6-5 favorite.

Sweet Sweet will have a chance to make amends Monday, when she heads a seven-horse field entered in the $70,000 Union Avenue Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares at six furlongs.

Shootist puts speed to test in mile debut

DEL MAR, Calif. - Trainer Peter Miller admits that starting Shootist in Monday's second race at Del Mar is something of a risk.

Shootist has never run beyond 6 1/2 furlongs, but is appearing in a one-mile optional claimer for California-breds. The decision to start him in a longer race was suggested by jockey Corey Nakatani, who rode Shootist to a fourth-place finish in an optional claimer over six furlongs here July 23.

'Park Avenue' holds on in Iselin

After opening a clear lead in upper stretch, Park Avenue Ball has just enough left to win.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Park Avenue Ball scored a win for the home team with a three-quarter-length victory in the Grade 3, $265,000 Saturday at Monmouth Park.

A New Jersey-bred 4-year-old, Park Avenue Ball got his first victory in four tries at the 1 1/8-mile distance, stopping the clock in 1:49.73 on the fast track before a crowd of 10,621.

The Park Avenue Ball ($4.80) team are New Jersey-bred through-and-through. Jockey Chris DeCarlo, trainer Jim Ryerson, and owners Marianne and Charlie Hesse all hail from the Garden State.

Baze wins nine races in a row

Russell Baze missed setting an American record for consecutive victories Saturday, when his mount, the odds-on Multiple, finished fourth behind stablemate Triola in the second race at the Bay Meadows Fair.

Baze was looking for his 10th straight victory after winning with his final two mounts Thursday and all seven of his mounts Friday.

His nine straight wins tied the U.S. record for consecutive victories set by Albert Adams at Marlboro, Md., in 1930 and tied by Tony Black at Atlantic City in 1992, according to Bay Meadows publicist Tom Ferrall.

This time it counts for Cryptoquip

Cryptoquip was denied her first stakes win last month at River Downs, when a starting-gate malfunction voided the result of the Queen City Oaks, but Saturday at Arlington, the result stood, with Cryptoquip a half-length better than favored Coolwind in the $144,500 .

Woodbine: Exacta for owner, trainer

Stillistillmovin and My List, both owned by Tucci Stable and trained by Nick Gonzalez, ran one-two in the $125,800 Ontario Debutante Stakes at Woodbine.

Stillistillmovin dueled up front with favored Lottacosta through a quick opening quarter-mile of 21.71 seconds in the five-furlong dash for 2-year-olds fillies. She began to draw away from that rival at the eighth pole and coasted home to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

My List, a maiden, closed from seventh and last to finish two lengths clear of Lottacosta, who held third despite bobbling in deep stretch.

Finger Lakes: Chief Officer in a romp

Trainer Bill Mott successfully invaded Finger Lakes from his Saratoga base, sending Chief Officer west and scoring a resounding win in the $126,725 Lady Finger Stakes.

Chief Officer, who won his racing debut by 10 lengths at Belmont in late June, was coming off a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Schuylerville at Saratoga.

Laurel: Les Ry Leigh dominates

Ridden by Rosie Napravnik, Les Ry Leigh sat in third place, just off the pace, then glided up the rail into the lead and pulled away to a decisive victory in the $75,000 Twixt at Laurel.

My Misty's Echo, under Ryan Fogelsonger, went to the front in the Twixt, setting fractions of 23.52 seconds for the quarter-mile and 47.68 seconds for the half, and then Napravnik and Les Ry Leigh made their move after six furlongs in 1:12.62, going on to win by 7 3/4 lengths.
