Magnificent Song scores

Magnificent Song, under Garrett Gomez, rallied from last place to run down stablemate Somethinaboutbetty to win Friday's Grade 3, $112,900 by one length at soggy Saratoga.

Somethinaboutbetty, who set the early pace, finished second by 1 3/4 lengths over Quite a Bride, who suffered her first career defeat on turf after four straight wins.

Magnificent Song and Somethinaboutbetty are both trained by Todd Pletcher, who has won the first three graded stakes of the meet.

Buzzards Bay may skip meet

DEL MAR, Calif. - Buzzards Bay, the winner of the Oaklawn Handicap in April and one of the nation's top older horses, is unlikely to start at the Del Mar meeting and may have only one prep race before the Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4, trainer Ron Ellis said on Friday.

Ellis said that Buzzards Bay will be shipped to Santa Anita and will be based with his stable there for the rest of the summer. Ellis said that Buzzards Bay did not handle the Del Mar track well in a half-mile workout on Tuesday.

"I didn't like the reaction in his legs," Ellis said.

Anifantis assigned Atticus Kristy top weight of 120 pounds for the five-furlong Turf Sprint Championship, one more than trainer Patrick Biancone's Australian-bred Man of Illusion.

Speed in Finley not on Stone Rain's level

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Sunday's $50,000-added Ernest Finley Handicap at the Sonoma County Fair seems pretty straightforward. Although there are four horses who like the lead, no one can match the early speed of Stone Rain, who has won four straight in wire-to-wire fashion at Sunday's six-furlong distance.

Most recently, Stone Rain scored a five-length win in the Sam Whiting at Pleasanton on July 8.

"Every race on paper, it looks like there's someone who might go for the lead against him, but he always seems to get the lead," said his trainer, Billy Morey.

Turf experience may be key in juvenile sprint

Online to Go owns the best Beyer Speed Figure and the widest margin of victory among the dozen lightly raced 2-year-olds who will race 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in Sunday's $60,000 Chenery Stakes at Colonial Downs.

But since Online to Go's 8 3/4-length romp and 69 Beyer came three months ago in a dirt sprint at Pimlico, savvy bettors may want to think long and hard about taking a short price. Online to Go, trained by Tim Salzman, is listed as the 9-5 favorite on the track's morning line off that debut win.
