Showdown of fast stakes fillies

Open Meadows and Rachelsarompin each won six-furlong stakes in 1:10 and change this summer. Monday night, the two will meet for the first time - and at six furlongs - in the $50,000 Ponca City for 3-year-old fillies at Remington Park.

Open Meadows won at six furlongs in her last start, when she captured the $40,000 Valor Farm at Lone Star Park on July 8. It was a powerful win for the filly, who broke from the rail and went on to a 1 3/4-length win in 1:10.40.

Snowdrop tries to carry speed on turf

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Ten 3-year-old fillies signed up for the getaway-day feature at the Sonoma County Fair.

For some, the one-mile allowance race marks a return to a favored surface - turf. For others, it marks a chance to discover if turf is a viable option for their careers.

San Clemente Blue, Snowdrop, and Minister of Joy make their turf debuts. For San Clemente Blue and Snowdrop, who lost by a nose in the Swepida at Stockton after setting the pace, the two-turn experience will also be new.

Contention runs deep in Classic

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Spaghetti Mouse and True Metropolitan look like the ones to beat in the $100,000 B.C. Cup Classic at Hastings on Monday.

The Classic headlines British Columbia Cup Day, the season's biggest afternoon of racing at Hastings. There has been a change in the format to three of the seven stakes races on the 10-race card. The Classic, Sprint and Distaff have been opened up to horses bred or owned in British Columbia, while the other four stakes remain restricted to B.C.-breds.

Count to Three taking shot to tally four in row

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Count to Three seeks her fourth consecutive win on Monday at Woodbine in the $150,000 Royal North Stakes, a six-furlong turf dash for fillies and mares.

Count to Three was campaigned over route distances last fall, but she has found her calling this year as a turf sprinter. She won the restricted Zadracarta Stakes in her next-to-last outing, and was recently victorious in the allowance prep for the Royal North.

Trainer Mark Frostad said Count to Three has matured since last year.

The Max offers connections repeat chance

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Owner Robert Mitchell and trainer Bert Blake will be looking to repeat in Monday's $100,000 Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia Downs.

The Manitoba Derby heads a blockbuster card that includes three $40,000 stakes - the Jack Hardy, Winnipeg Futurity, and Wheat City.

Mitchell and Blake won last year's Manitoba Derby with Prime Time T.V., who had been training for a return to racing but died here early Thursday morning after a severe bout of colic.

Notis Otis facing Lord Nelson in Sprint

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The B.C. Cup Sprint, which goes as the second race on Monday's British Columbia Cup card, drew only five horses, but despite the short field it is still one of the most intriguing races of the day.

A very tough Notis Otis will probably go off as the favorite, but it's a wide-open race that includes perennial local champ Lord Nelson.

No clear favorite in Sprint

EDMONTON, Alberta - The absence of Smudgeledo, who is sidelined with a suspensory problem, has given Monday's $50,000 Sun Sprint Championship a wide-open look at Northlands Park.

Cool Bender, coming off a pair of allowance victories, is the highweight at 118 pounds in the field of six.

In his only stakes appearance this year, Cool Bender was seventh in the Stampede Park Sprint Championship. He will be opposed by two invaders from Vancouver in the 6 1/2-furlong feature.

Flashy Bull back in the Haskell

OCEANPORT, N.J. - A week of indecision apparently ended Friday night when West Point Thoroughbreds opted to run Flashy Bull in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park instead of the West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Racetrack.

Both stakes for 3-year-olds take place Sunday.

Flashy Bull was on target for the Haskell until Friday when the decision was made to run in West Virginia because it appeared to be an easier spot.

That decision was reversed Friday night.
