Now Victory upsets in Grace Handicap

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Rated early after battling on suicide fractions in his last start, Now Victory ($19.20) outfinished perfect tripper Capitano, winning a head bob in the $101,200 Joseph T. Grace Handicap at the Sonoma County Fair on Saturday.

Kept under a snug hold by jockey Frank Alvarado, Now Victory relaxed during the 1 1/16-mile turf race unlike his previous start when he dueled head-and-head through 22.28, 44.59, 1:10.04 fractions with Megabyte in the Alamedan Handicap at Pleasanton.

Untouched Talent remains unbeaten

DEL MAR, Calif. - Untouched Talent remained unbeaten after two starts with a three-length win in Saturday's $150,000 at Del Mar, but the margin was deceptive.

Jockey Victor Espinoza did not urge Untouched Talent in the final sixteenth and could have won the race by a wider margin. Untouched Talent ($5) ran 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:18.20.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Something will have to give when a couple of improving 3-year-old turf horses, and Brilliant, put their three-race win streaks on the line Monday at Saratoga in the $150,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Breeders' Cup Stakes. The Grade 2 race for 3-year-olds is carded at 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

Sweet Way in tough for grass try

DEL MAR, Calif. - After a few delays, the career debut of proved to be well worth the wait at Hollywood Park on July 12. She closed from seventh in a maiden race at 1 1/16 miles to win by two lengths as the favorite.

Sweet Way will make her second start, and first on turf, in a $63,000 allowance race for fillies and mares at Del Mar on Monday.

The mile race will be a stern test for Sweet Way, who is trained by John Shirreffs for Marty and Pam Wygod. Sweet Way is facing fillies and mares who have raced on turf, some of whom are multiple winners.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N Y - In a carbon copy of his winning ride the previous afternoon aboard Cherokee Jewel in the Capote Belle Stakes, Eibar Coa drove Swap Fliparoo through along the fence in the stretch to overtake 34-1 longshot Original Spin en route to a two-length victory in Saturday's $250,000 at Saratoga.

Hall of Fame inductions

Carl Hanford, the trainer of Kelso, along with jockey Bill Boland and Cougar II, the Eclipse Award-winning turf horse of 1972, will be inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on Monday morning in ceremonies scheduled to take place at the Fasig-Tipton sale pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Hambletonian to Glidemaster

John Campbell, the dominant driver in the history of harness racing, extended his own record with a sixth victory in the $1.5 million Hambletonian on Saturday at the Meadowlands.

Campbell guided Glidemaster ($14) to a 1 1/4-length victory over Chocolatier in the trotting classic for 3-year-olds. Blue Mac Lad finished third. The time for the mile was a stakes-record 1:51.20.

Campbell, 51, has won over $215 million in a Hall of Fame career. This was one of his most satisfying wins, coming with a colt who almost missed last week's eliminations after stepping on a nail.

Nicole's Dream again beats males

Nicole's Dream wins the $250,000 Turf Sprint Championship at Calder Race Course on Saturday.

Larry Rivelli made the right choice.

The trainer thought Nicole's Dream would have an easier time making the lead in the against the boys than she would in the Distaff Turf Sprint Championship against the girls.

Under E.T. Baird, Nicole's Dream broke on top in the $250,000 Turf Sprint Championship at Calder Race Course and led gate to wire to win the race by one length over a late-running Atticus Kristy, the 2-1 favorite. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to Nacascolo, who got third by a neck over Blue Pepsi Lodge.
