'Park Avenue' holds on in Iselin

After opening a clear lead in upper stretch, Park Avenue Ball has just enough left to win.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Park Avenue Ball scored a win for the home team with a three-quarter-length victory in the Grade 3, $265,000 Saturday at Monmouth Park.

A New Jersey-bred 4-year-old, Park Avenue Ball got his first victory in four tries at the 1 1/8-mile distance, stopping the clock in 1:49.73 on the fast track before a crowd of 10,621.

The Park Avenue Ball ($4.80) team are New Jersey-bred through-and-through. Jockey Chris DeCarlo, trainer Jim Ryerson, and owners Marianne and Charlie Hesse all hail from the Garden State.

Baze wins nine races in a row

Russell Baze missed setting an American record for consecutive victories Saturday, when his mount, the odds-on Multiple, finished fourth behind stablemate Triola in the second race at the Bay Meadows Fair.

Baze was looking for his 10th straight victory after winning with his final two mounts Thursday and all seven of his mounts Friday.

His nine straight wins tied the U.S. record for consecutive victories set by Albert Adams at Marlboro, Md., in 1930 and tied by Tony Black at Atlantic City in 1992, according to Bay Meadows publicist Tom Ferrall.

Cryptoquip was denied her first stakes win last month at River Downs, when a starting-gate malfunction voided the result of the Queen City Oaks, but Saturday at Arlington, the result stood, with Cryptoquip a half-length better than favored Coolwind in the $144,500 .

Woodbine: Exacta for owner, trainer

Stillistillmovin and My List, both owned by Tucci Stable and trained by Nick Gonzalez, ran one-two in the $125,800 Ontario Debutante Stakes at Woodbine.

Stillistillmovin dueled up front with favored Lottacosta through a quick opening quarter-mile of 21.71 seconds in the five-furlong dash for 2-year-olds fillies. She began to draw away from that rival at the eighth pole and coasted home to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

My List, a maiden, closed from seventh and last to finish two lengths clear of Lottacosta, who held third despite bobbling in deep stretch.

Finger Lakes: Chief Officer in a romp

Trainer Bill Mott successfully invaded Finger Lakes from his Saratoga base, sending Chief Officer west and scoring a resounding win in the $126,725 Lady Finger Stakes.

Chief Officer, who won his racing debut by 10 lengths at Belmont in late June, was coming off a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Schuylerville at Saratoga.

Laurel: Les Ry Leigh dominates

Ridden by Rosie Napravnik, Les Ry Leigh sat in third place, just off the pace, then glided up the rail into the lead and pulled away to a decisive victory in the $75,000 Twixt at Laurel.

My Misty's Echo, under Ryan Fogelsonger, went to the front in the Twixt, setting fractions of 23.52 seconds for the quarter-mile and 47.68 seconds for the half, and then Napravnik and Les Ry Leigh made their move after six furlongs in 1:12.62, going on to win by 7 3/4 lengths.

Weatherstorm Dowling favorite

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Weatherstorm will try to make it four in a row when he heads a field of 10 Michigan-bred 3-year-old colts and geldings in Tuesday's $50,000 Dowling Stakes at Great Lakes Downs. The Dowling, at one mile, is named for the late Jim Dowling, who is considered the father of Michigan racing.

Victory Lap benefits from hot pace

Victory Lap rallied from far off a hot pace to collar Dash of Humor in deep stretch and post a 28-1 upset in the $100,000 Ellis Park Breeders' Cup Turf on Saturday in Henderson, Ky.

Victory Lap, ridden by Orlando Mojica, trailed the other 11 fillies and mares in the early stages of the 1 1/16-mile turf race, but by the far turn she was making up steady ground on the tiring front-runners. Meanwhile, Dash of Humor was effortlessly cruising past front-running Baena on the front end, but after opening daylight in midstretch, she was no match for the late surge of Victory Lap.

Pick six carryover at $101,471

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - An upset win by Baron Von Tap ($91) in Saturday's sixth race helped spark a pick six carryover of $101,471 heading into Sunday's card at Saratoga.

Saturday's pick six sequence also included wins by Got the Last Laugh ($17.40) in the first leg and Marieval ($18.40) in the last leg. Consolation tickets (5 of 6) each returned $1,537.

Four races in Sunday's pick six sequence are carded for the turf including the $70,000 John's Call Stakes at 1 5/8 miles, but there is rain in the forecast overnight.

'Sweet' in her kind of spot

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Horses either take to turf sprints or they don't.

Those who do often becomes specialists who excell at the short distances on grass.

Trainer Cliff DeLima has such a specialist for Monday's feature, a $25,000 optional claimer for fillies and mares at five furlongs on turf: Sweet Kendall Jo.

"Some just love the turf and the short distance," said trainer Cliff DeLima. "I've seen a lot win from off the pace even at that short distance."
