Pie Corner standout on Beyers

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Pie Corner, 2 for 4 on turf this season, will likely rule as the favorite in Sunday's $30,000 Niagara Falls Cup at Fort Erie.

The seven-furlong Niagara Falls, to be run as a $10,000 starter allowance, attracted 14 entrants. On turf, the field is limited to 10 starters.

Layne Giliforte will saddle Pie Corner in the Niagara Falls for Melnyk Racing Stable, but he would have preferred to run Pie Corner in a turf race for $10,000 claimers a week later. But he didn't want to take a chance rain might interfere with his plans.

Ashkal Way figures to fire again

Joseph Brown / EquiPhotos
Ashkal Way, who has three wins and a second since coming to North America, should get the pace he needs in Saturday's Bernard Baruch.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Ashkal Way had his three-race North American winning streak snapped when he finished second in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap three weeks ago. Though he comes back on relatively short rest, he may be well spotted to start another streak in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga.
