Gray the way to go on green

DEL MAR, Calif. - One year after T.H. Approval and Runaway Dancer emerged as the top long-distance grass horses in California, the division remains as gray as ever.

Ten older horses entered the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap on Sunday, but the $250,000 turf race at 1 3/8 miles boils down to a match of grays - T.H. Approval, the class of the field, and horse-for-course Runaway Dancer.

T.H. Approval's win last month in the Sunset Handicap at Hollywood Park was his third in a Grade 2; Runaway Dancer's win this month in the Escondido Handicap was his third on the Del Mar turf.

No catching Fleet Indian

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - As one of the owners of Ashado, Paul Saylor left Saratoga dejected after last year's Personal Ensign Handicap. As the sole owner of Fleet Indian, Saylor left Saratoga extremely happy following Friday's running of the Grade 1, $400,000 .

Able to set a slow, uncontested pace under Jose Santos, Fleet Indian ran away from Balletto in the stretch to record a 4 1/4-length victory in the Personal Ensign. It was 6 3/4 lengths back to Sole Search in third. Yolanda B. Too and India Halo completed the order of finish.

Lava Man's next - the Clement Hirsch on turf

DEL MAR, Calif. - Lava Man, the leading older horse in California, is likely to make his next start in the $250,000 Clement Hirsch Turf Championship at 1 1/4 miles on turf on Sept. 30 instead of the $500,000 Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap on the main track on Oct. 7, trainer Doug O'Neill and co-owner Steve Kenly said on Friday.

O'Neill said that he has discussed plans for Lava Man in the last week with Kenly and co-owner Jason Wood following Lava Man's sixth consecutive stakes win in the Pacific Classic here last Sunday.

Gilded Gold back home after a rough trip

OCEANPORT, N.J. - After Gilded Gold traveled a long way for little reward, trainer Alan Goldberg hopes for better luck and a cleaner trip closer to home Sunday at Monmouth Park in the $80,000 Incredible Revenge Stakes for fillies and mare at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Gilded Gold most recently went to Calder for the $250,000 Distaff Turf Sprint Championship. The 6-year-old mare was the even-money favorite, but found nothing but trouble.

Gilded Gold, who normally sets the pace, wound up eighth in the 10-horse field and ran into traffic when she tried to rally.
